I plugged an ac adapter into my sony walkman. I forgot to set the adapter voltage to the required 1.5V, it was instead set to 12V. I smelled something and immediately realized the error. I unplugged the walkman. Now the walkman turns on but the 'battery empty " sign comes on after 2-3 seconds and then it acts as though the battery were dead and stops playing anything, radio, tape etc. It does this when I use it with the battery ( it has a square Sony propietory battery and can also be used with one AA battery with a small attachement part) , and does this also when plugged into the 1.5V ac adapter. I probably burned something out? Is this something that can be fixed, and if so, how can it be done? Thank you, Anne
Thank you, I tried a number of different batteries but its all the same. The player acts as if the battery is very low. It goes for about 4 seconds, then it stops. The battery is more than likely burned out. If too much voltage goes through to them they will short out. Will need a replacement battrey. Try ebay, or a Sony dealer.

What does a power adapter do?
An AC adapter, AC/DC adapter, or AC/DC converter is a type of external power supply, often enclosed in a case similar to an AC plug. ... AC adapters are used with electrical devices that require power but do not contain internal components to derive the required voltage and power from mains power.
OR
power adapter. A power supply for electronic devices. Also called an "AC adapter" or "charger," power adapters plug into a wall outlet and convert AC to a single DC voltage. Computers use multiple DC voltages, and the power adapter is the external part of the power supply for a laptop.

This is an old type of PC speaker system. Can it be powered by batteries. How many batteries needed?? Multiply the number of batteries by 1.5 volts and you get the voltage rating of your needed adapter. You can also take a look at the back of these GE speakers. Maybe you can find the voltage rating. You may also consider buying a new set of PC speaker that can be plug direct to your power outlet. You can buy it at a cost slightly higher than your needed adapter.
A transformer type (Linear Mode Power Supply) AC to DC power adapter with a 9.V nominal output, measures about 12.V without load when tested with a multimeter. A power adapter with a nominal output of 7.5 V, measures a little over 9.V. Considering a number of people across different forums reported the adapter's measured power output as 12.V, I think the nominal rating of the AC to DC adapter should be 9.V. However, keep away from Switch Mode Power Supplies.
Either the ac adapter is defective or the dc connector on the motherboard is bad. I would test the ac adapter with a volt meter and make sure you are getting voltage through first. If there is power then likely the dc jack and someone will have to solder in a new connector
You will need to change entire power supply/distribution circuit since you have managed to fry it all with twice the voltage required by the system. Speakers should be OK only the circuitry needs to be rectified and too by a professional/expert technician ...........sodeep
hello. tjl001 you should look the socket ac plug and try to plug in and plug out ,the socket maybe crack or the spring not work. I hope this can fix you trouble.
