This is a problem occurring in all the play station 3 consoles....... this is mainly because of the poor quality of the disc.....as a result it leads to the damage of ur PS3 lens..............use good original discs........the heating effect is due to the long usage of pirated discs ...
check your lens if its working good then better download this Repair Guide for further information .........

Your blueray lens may have blown i had the same problem it will play any **** (cd,dvd or black layered ps2 games) you best hope it is still under warranty and call sony up and request a repair it will be all free if under warranty but if not then it will cost £100 - £130 hope this helps

If your PS3 has 4 USB ports in it, it will be able to play old PS2 DVD games. The newer versions only have 2 USB ports and have the DVD-playing option taken out.

If the movies are DVD (like ps2 games) It could be that the laser for your PS3 has issues-
Try using a lint-free lens cloth to clean the laser lens- if that does not work, you may need to contact Sony for an RMA to get your PS3 repaired

My PS3 now will not play PS3 games but still plays PS2 games
You're blu-ray drive has partially died. It's a three part laser (cd, dvd, blu-ray). The most important part of yours has died that's why you can still play dvd and PS2 games because they use the dvd laser and not the blu-ray.

The reason why ur ps3 40gb wont run ps2 games is because its only a 40gb. If u had a 80gb ps3 then u could play ps2 games.

60gb ps3 wont play ps3 games
The issue is the laser (actually has different diodes for blu ray, ps2 format and regular DVD.
Seems like in your case the only one that is burnt is the blu ray.
Send it back to Sony for repairs or if you do not have warranty purchase a replacement lens and install it yourself.

Ps3 horrible problem...
r ur ps2 cd's original or copies coz the ps3 doesn't play copies
abd check ur dvd if it's PAL or NTSC and then check ur ps3 for the same thing
if the ps3 is PAL it only plays PAL dvd's and vice versa

the sony ps2 plays plays all games either ps3 games and othe console games .to play dvd games after inserting the disk first yu have to press three or four times the power puton contnously and the game automatically starts ok bye.

My ps3 wont play ps2 games. it worked then i left and came back and it didnt work anymore. ps3 games still play but not ps2.
It sounds like the dvd lens has packed up, but not the blu ray lens. Are the ps2 games your trying to load all clean? Do DVD's work? If not it sounds like your lens. So phone sony its a job for them, if you from the uk, and ps3 is under 1 year old it'll be free of charge, other countries are different.
