The battery allows the motherboard to remember the time and settings when it power is off.
Yes, it dies.
Just like every battery, when it expends all of its power it stops working.
They can fail prematurely if there is a short circuit or power surge to the motherboard.
They usually last pretty long. (5-10 years)
It is safe to remove it, test it and replace it.
You will not lose any data on your hard drive.

I hope this helps.

What is mean CMOS battery use for in computer motherboard ?

CMOS stands for Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor. It is basically a chip in the mother board that stores information such as your system hardware settings and date and time. It is powered by a battery the size of a small coin. Without the CMOS battery, your computer will revert to original manufacture hard ware settings every time you turn on your computer. If you keep having to set the correct date and time of your computer every time you turn it on, then it's time to replace the CMOS battery. I hope that helps.
tip

How to replace the CMOS battery in an Acer Aspire laptop.

General info
All laptops have a CMOS battery. The main purpose for the CMOS battery is to store the system time, date and BIOS settings even if the computer is turned off or the main battery dies. Individual Acer Aspire laptop models differ somewhat, but the general steps are the same when replacing a dead CMOS battery.

Before you start
1) Read through the owner's manual for your particular Acer Aspire laptop to determine what kind of CMOS battery you need.
2) Purchase the battery through Acer or a local or online computer parts dealer.
3) Turn the laptop off and unplug it. Also unplug any external hard drives, cameras, or other external devices.
4) Turn the laptop over (bottom facing up), then touch something metal to remove static charge.

Removal of the CMOS battery
Remove the Phillips screws that secure the motherboard cover (refer to your owner's manual if necessary), then release the cover from the clips on the bottom of the plastic casing. Lay the cover aside then locate the CMOS battery cable on the right side of the motherboard. Unplug the cable then remove the battery.

The battery should look something like this

slasher_x_2.gif
Plugging the new battery in
Plug the new CMOS battery cable into the motherboard. Slide the battery partially under the laptop casing (somewhere to hold it in place), then align the cover with the slots on the bottom of the laptop housing. Replace the screws then turn the laptop back over.

Finalizing
1) Turn the laptop on.
2)Enter your BIOS (usually by pressing the "Delete" key) before the operating system loads.
3) Follow the BIOS prompts or refer to your Acer Aspire owner's manual to reset your time, date and desired system settings.

Reason: Anytime the CMOS battery is unplugged for more than a few seconds your BIOS will be reset to the default manufacturer settings. If you make any changes to the BIOS that cause problems with your Acer Aspire, unplug the CMOS battery for 3 to 5 seconds to correct the problem.

How can i remove the battery

WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL.

http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules

Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source.

Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer.

While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards.

ASUS motherboards, manufactured for both Intel and AMD processors, are a popular choice for custom-built computers.

The motherboard's battery is a flat, round 3-volt lithium battery.

This battery, which is installed in a special motherboard socket, powers up CMOS (complementary metal--oxide--semiconductor).

CMOS is an integrated motherboard chip that stores current BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) settings, such as system date and time.

A CMOS battery may last for many years, but eventually dies.

So you need to replace it.

Purchase a new CMOS battery available from many retailers (see Resources section). ASUS motherboards typically use a lithium CR2032 battery.

Turn off the computer.

Remove the computer case side panel.

Lay the computer on its side.

Find the CMOS battery that is situated in the socket approximately in the center of the motherboard.

Touch an unpainted metal part of the computer case or another metal surface to discharge static electricity.

Lift the CMOS battery out of its socket, using your fingers, and set it aside.

Insert the new lithium battery gently into the socket. Make sure that the battery's positive pole, marked with a plus sign (+), faces up.

Move the computer into the upright position and close the side panel of the computer case.

Press the "Power" button to turn the computer on.

Hope this helps.

How are the default bios settings for a desktop hp pentuim 4 computer. The main reason why I' asking this is that I'

ok you reset your bios by given process

Yet another way to clear the CMOS is to reseat the CMOS battery. By removing and then reinstalling the CMOS battery, you remove the source of power that saves your computer's BIOS settings.

Another way to clear the CMOS is to short the "CLEAR CMOS" jumper on your motherboard, assuming you have one (most motherboards do).

Will a laptop work without the cmos battery?

Typically, the solder points on motherboard components are so small that only robots and people with mad skillz and small hands can solder the components onto the motherboard without shorting something out or overheating another adjacent, small component. As to whether the mobo should work without the battery bracket or not, that would likely vary from motherboard to motherboard, and no, it NOT something that is likely to be covered in the motherboard users manual. Only the designers of the motherboard would likely know the answer to that question, and they might not know for sure without trying it (they probably never thought to wonder on that question). It's definitely not *designed* to run without that bracket on there, but you may get lucky and it may work without it. But you probably just ruined your motherboard. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Can you turn off the password on the motherboard

The best and easiest method: Close OS and shut down the electricity power of computer. Open your computer box (Make sure you have your manual handy), LOCATE THE CMOS BATTERY (it is look like a silver Small coin) take out the CMOS battery from the main board ( note: Before taking out the battery make sure that you already touch metal object to remove static electricity) . Then once you take out that the bios password will be reset to blank. Put it back after a few minutes. Same process as what you did when you take it out. Hope this help. Good Luck
