I bought all new cartridges, inserted them the way they were removed, but message board still says defected cartridges. how to install ink properly and make error message disappear?

Here is a video from HP explaining the process. IF you followed this procedure and are getting errors, then you may have bigger issues. I am assuming you are using genuine HP ink, not remanufactured or refilled cartridges.

How to disassemble

Power on printer and soak up spilled ink with towels. Next we suggest you remove PRINTHEAD from printer and inspect for damage to contact pin(s) on the INSIDE OF THE PRINTHEAD ASSEMBLY. Please refer to printhead removal procedure below for reference (HP Officejet PRO 8600 Printhead Removal & Replacement Procedure):

Please note that if you choose to refill your ink cartridges with Costco/Frys, etc., the refill comes with a new chip so the ink level monitoring will be reset and function like a brand new HP OEM ink cartridge. Why does my non-oem cartridge reads as damaged on my HP Officejet Pro 8600?

you need to replace all colors with after market cartridges not just one

I installed HP officejet 8600 new printer cartridges, now "there is a problem with the printer or ink system. turn printer off then on. if problem persists, call HP"

Try this once: remove the cartridges you did place, check if all contacts are clean and place them back, one by one. Just a little piece of paper or plastic can spoil the fun. Also check the con acts in the printer if you can see them. (eventually use a slash light)
Make sure all cartridges are correctly placed and every lit and lock is closed correct.
Then start again.
If tis does not help, call HP.
