I tried to restore, reset, format, etc. my 2 gb ipod still boots to the language screen and won't go any further.
My 1 GB Nano is also stuck on the language screen. I did the 5 Rs. It shows up in iTunes, syncs. I clicked on the button to use it as an external drive. I USED THE DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR IT. It said nothing was wrong with it. Everything is OK except the click wheel doesn't work. Can't get past language screen
I am having the same problem with my 20 GB click wheel. I can restore it, put songs on it, sync it, and then when it reaches the language screen it just locks up. My 1st gen 2 GB has the same problem - stuck on the language screen. Tried the recommended reset fix but no dice. Other sites have suggested scotch-taping the wheel to improve contact or banging it on your knee for shock therapy I suppose. None of it works. I would appreciate any other suggestions.

If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, the steps to reset it vary by model.
Toggle the Hold switch. To do this, slide the switch to
Hold (an orange bar appears) and then slide it back (orange bar is
hidden).
Reset the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
If
the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computer
and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPod
appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is
needed.
If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod
is not seen in iTunes, connect the iPod to a power source by either
plugging it into an Apple iPod USB Power Adapter or directly into a
computer's USB port.
Let the iPod charge for at least 20 minutes. Note:
If the iPod is connected to a computer, make sure the computer does not
sleep, standby, or hibernate during the 20-minute charging period.
After
the iPod has charged for at least 20 minutes and while it is still
connected to the power source, toggle the Hold switch again as in step
1.
Try resetting the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.

you have to hold the center button and the menu button to reset it...if that doesnt work you will have to plug it into the computer and use the restore function on the iTunes
My 0xc000000c "Restore Failed" prompt seemed to be the result of disk surface damage on the restore disk. After burning the restore disk to a new disk, the restore proceeded normally. Try making a copy of the original restore disk to a known good blank disk.
If you accidentally set iPod nano to use a language you don’t understand
You can reset the language.
1 Press and hold Menu until the main menu appears.
2 Choose the sixth menu item (Settings).
3 Choose the last menu item (Reset Settings).
4 Choose the first item (Reset) and select a language.
Other iPod nano settings, such as song repeat, are also reset.
Note: If you added or removed items from the iPod nano main menu (see “Adding or
Removing Items on the Main Menu” on page 11) the Settings menu item may be in a
different place. If you can’t find the Reset Settings menu item, you can restore
iPod nano to its original state and choose a language. See “Updating and Restoring
iPod Software” on page 69.

I have been reading other posts and supposedly the problem with the language screen is that the link inside the ipod for the lock button has come unhooked and needs to be hooked back. I will post the link so you can read about it for yourself. I think this means you have to open up your ipod. Read some of the posts in this website for more info. No official word on fixing the problem. Just suggestions. http://www.command-tab.com/2006/03/31/fixing-a-frozen-ipod/
