SOURCE: Does the Hayward GM-245 Sand filter tank separate

I am not that familiar with the G series Hayward filters, but most sand filter tanks do not separate. It's a labor intensive job so think hard before trying it if you haven't before. If your backwash valve is on top of the filter, the plumbing will have to be removed. There are two ways that I have removed the sand. Scooping it out by hand or using a shop vac. Remember the sand is going to be very heavy when wet. You will need to go through the top. Some filters have a large drain plug in the bottom that "supposedly" you can drain the sand out through.I have done this once and it makes a big mess that you still need to clean up.

Be sure to buy replacement o-rings and gaskets as needed. There is also a product called a sand vac that is in essence a siphoning system.

Be careful not to damage the laterals it the bottom of the filter. When replacing the sand, I put small gravel (pea gravel) carefully under and partially around the laterals to help support them from the weight of the new sand.

When you are done, be sure to backwash the new sand to remove dirt, impurities, etc. This is a general overview. There are books online that give more detail or use a similar filter's manual...

I put my Hayward ST180T on rinse to vacuum the pool and I ended up with sand in the pool what happen?

You are using the wrong setting to vacuum. This type of pool filter should be set to "filter" for normal vacuuming or to "waste" for heavy loads. The "rinse" setting makes sure that all of the dirty water is out of your filter after backwashing.

I have a Hayward 160T high rate sand filter. How often should the sand be changed? Can you over shock a pool when you first open it? What type of sand and where can I get it?.

Q. I have a Hayward 160T high rate sand filter. How often should the sand be changed? Every 3 - 5 years.

Q. Can you over shock a pool when you first open it? Only in the sense that a liner or some of the equipment will not like ultra-high chlorine levels and depending on the shock used you can mess up pH and Alkalinity...generally you shock with one pound per 10K gallons.

Q. What type of sand and where can I get it? #20 silica sand...some places will call it fine sand. Do not use the coarse or medium coarse sand.

I have a leak in my above ground sand filter, model 140. the leak is around the drain. How can I fix it? It is a Hayward, high rate sand filter, GM series, model 140ab. Thank you

Usually in th bottom of the filter you have two parts. The first is a piece with a screen that threads into the plastic housing. The second is a Cap with a rubber washer inside. Make sure the rubber washer is there. Do not overtighten the drain into the houseing

Can you backwash on a Hayward swim pro filter system

Yes you can. The only filters that need disasembly are cartridge filters. Here is the link for the Hayward owners manuals. The manual explains the procedure depending if you have a multi-port (rotary) or push/pull type valve.
