SOURCE: v smile pocket problems

Do you still have your receipt? You could try to echange it at the store. Vsmile is coming out with a newer slightly different handheld model you could try. Though, we have a vsmile for the home and a leapster as a handheld game. Which both of my children have loved. Have you tried calling Vtech about the problem? I've had to call before about the home unit and they were very helpful. (Incedently, I have had problems with that, so if you ever do here's a helpful tip: Reset the machine by unplugging EVERY cord and pressing the two front buttons together for one full timed minute! We were having problems with a power issue and this solved it) They may be just as helpful as Leapster's Leap Frog company and send you a replacement! Once on a long car trip my daughter got sick in the car, while playing, so needless to say the game system got it too. And when I called Vtech about what to do, they sent a replacement! Try calling Vtech and see. You never know! Good luck!! :)

SOURCE: new Vtech Smile won't advance to games in TV Mode

Try plugging the joystick into the opposite port - if it is on the Player 2 port, plug it into Player 1, etc. If it works in one port, but not theother, then one of the ports is bad/damaged. If it doesn't work in either port, it is the joystick itself. Replacement joysticks can be ordered from VTech, Amazon, Target or Walmart.

Other troubleshooting methods:

1) Press the Reset – Press and hold the ON button for about 10 seconds
2) Make sure the game is inserted far enough into the system, and that it is pointing in the right direction. You may occasionally need to clean the contacts.
3) Also, make sure you are using the supplied power cord/adapter, not batteries. Batteries cause more problems than they’re worth.

SOURCE: vtech v smile console (not pocket)

I seen many problems with these systems.
I'm an electronics engineer by trade.
Most problems are due to the cheap plateing on the cartridges contacts..it can make the console do very strange things.

firstly push back the spring loaded cover for the cartridge contacts (on the cart' not the machine) and give em a dry scrub with a scouring pad and a good wiping with a dry clean cloth....works 90% of the time.

some times it is needed to strip the console and clean the internal contacts in the cart' slot.

SOURCE: Vtech v.smile got wet. Need to know how to open

get a needle, heat it and meld a hole in the covers (round inserts) on the back. skrew a little skrew in the hole and pol de round thing out. Take a kros skrewdriver and remove the skrews. Also under the battery cover are 2. take of the cover and you can see the inside of the unit. Dry them, also the plastic contacts on de prints.

My daughter v smile pocket does not work

Sounds like the contacts on the games need to be cleaned. On the game cartridge, push back the little cover and clean the gold colored contacts on both sides. I use a cotton ball or q-tip with alcohol on it. Let it dry before you put it back in the v.smile.

Screen is blank

Try the reset button on the back of the unit.

Also try cleaning the contacts on the games. Push back the sleeve on the game and clean good with alcohol. If this doesn't do it, unplug it, and clean the contacts inside the unit with a qtip.

Hope this helps!
