I've had my 2040 for about 9 years and I have never had a problem.
I always have the needle down on the fabric before I press on the foot pedal. This prevents the thread from bunching underneath. It's always been a habit of mine to do this since I learned how to sew on treadle machines as a young girl.

If you have cleaned & lubricated the machine as indicated in your manual and the problem continues, the machine needs to go into the shop for professional service.

You definitely should take your machine to a pfaff tech! This is not a diy type of repair.

sometimes machine after sitting up the oil & any grease thats been used on the gears can become old,,you said you can't get anything to move,,it's possible that something is loose or broken,, I agree the machine needs to be serviced

Pfaff 1171 - inserting new sewing needle

Hello make sure that the needle is a front or side loading in the needle bar. the easiest way is to tell take the the needle with the flat side turn to the right or the left and see if it sides in either way hope this helps
