Remove the batteries for 60 seconds, at the same time press power and hold for the juration of the time, this will remove residual voltage and reset the processor ic, "long shot" if no change the zoom part of the lens is malfunctioning, the zoom motor or gears are jammed.
The non-functioning of the camera can be a fault in the zoom or auto focus sections and may be due to the failure of the Main control system or the drive. This seems to be a mechanical fault and a simple way is to reset.Remove the battery and card for some time. Now replace only the battery and while switching power ON, tap the lens hood on the palm of your hands so as to disengage any dirt or mechanism being struck. When the lens comes out try and pull the lens with care , repeat till the lens comes out totally to free and realign by itself.
If not we need to open and check for a jamming of the lens system:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Mj3Qp3xYU&feature=related Use some air to blow between the lens to dislodge any sand particles struck inside. Unless you are familiar with handling of small devices must the camera be opened. If so check the voltage on the motor drive, check the auto focus and Zoom drives, it must be free with manual movement. If jammed the motor can be removed and released. If none of these works then you can think of taking consensus with the service centre. Get estimate before you decide. It will be good to have it checked at the authorised service as you do not have to run around for spares.
1. Digital zoom is a part of digital cameras, and camcorders, which helps to crop the entire image, and then digitally enlarge the size of the viewfinder of the portion that is needed to zoom in on
2. Digital zoom crops the image down to a centred area with the same ratio
as the original, and also interpolating the result back up to the pixel
dimensions of the original. this method involves cropping, hence the
resolution and quality is reduced
3. Digital zoom, crops a portion of the image and then enlarges it back to size. And due to this, image quality is reduced in comparison with the original one.
4. Using the digital zoom allows the user to get closer to the subject when the photographer wants to be discreet about taking pictures, like taking a picture of a person in a graduation ceremony.
Optical Zoom
1. While taking a picture using a Camera to want to get a close shot of the subjectwithout moving physically closer, photographers use the optical zoom.
2. The optical zoom ratio of a digital camera measures how much the lens can actually zoom in to make subjects appear closer. Optical zoom, enlarges a picture while keeping the resolution and sharpness of the picture high.
3. There is no relation between optical zoom and the resolution of the photo, as optical zoom only enlarges the whole image or the subject to a certain range. So image quality only depends upon the mega pixel (MP) of the camera
4. Optical zoom is very useful, while taking a picture of a landscape, or to get a closer view of a subject, without reducing the quality of the entire image, like taking a picture of a Rainbow in the sky.

Please follow the steps: 1. Ensure batteries are fully charged. 2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand, dirt or any damaged etc. 3. Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck 4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 5 minutes and refit the battery only. 5. Now turn on camera( with out card ) and see ,if working then fix the memory card & again turn on the camera. If working then fine.
Otherwise format the memory card and fix back in camera again & try. Make sure before format the memory card take a back up all photos in your computer then format. If no luck then reset or restore the camera setting by pressing Menu key for 2 sec... in not done the press both Menu & self time key for 2 - 4 sec.
After all of this if you not success then its a lens error. The lens stuck from the inside becasue the lens guide pin is damaged or out of guide line. In this case you have to replace or repair the camera lens.

I used a variety of different methods, but here's what worked for my camera. Apparently the lens was just off the track.
1. Turn on the camera, and smack the back against the palm of your hand to get the lens to come out. 2.Hold the lens out until the "error screen" comes up. 3. Take the camera with the lens facing towards you, and use your thumbs to push on the lens. 4. Push firmly until the lens "clicks". 5. Turn off camera, then on again. 6. Hopefully cry tears of joy that you fixed it.
If you try turning on the camera with the lens cap on, you may get zoom error. Ensure that you are removing the lens cap before turning on the camera.
If the autofocus ring is held while taking the picture, or operating the lens this will also cause the Zoom error message coming up.
If that is not the problem, then the lens has troubles extending. This may happen because of dust stuck in lens mechanism, or because of a mechanical fault concerning the lens. Any cause preventing lens from full extention or retraction will trigger zoom error.
Dirt in the focus motor drive gears right behind the lens at the front.
It's a **** design (my opinion). The lens at the front moves in and out depending on your zoom level. It can come right out of the lens barrell at the front. So, if it can come out, dirt can get in. and it's a pig to clean out and reset. Bin it or sell for parts.
Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but they're still worth a try:
The lens assembly on the Camedia and many other cameras has a special motor to facilitate the zooming. It sounds as if your motor is actually working but it's not engaging the gears to drive the zoom in and out. It could be a fractured gear somewhere in that drive system. I wouldn't recommend pulling one apart. They are a mongrel to put back together the right way.
Keep your eyes open on Ebay for your model with a busted LCD or fault not associated with the lens and do a complete lens assembly transplant. Something which is relatively easy to do as long as you take notes of where all the parts and screws go. If you get left with no more than 2 screws when you've finished, you've done well.
System error zoom is the message I get when I try to use the zoom
