Each wheel/brake has its own sensor which reports back to the computer. If the sensor or wire to the sensor goes bad it kicks on the abs light. The cheaper code readers will not diagnose abs troubles. The higher end units with built in abs feature will tell you which circuit is bad, front left, right rear, etc. if all sensors working and no abs light on you can assume all is well.

My ABS light came on in my mercury sable what does that mean

When on, this means the anti lock brake system is not functioning. The brakes will work however in a panic stop situation the ab a system will not function and the car will not stop as quickly. A code scanner that can read abs codes is needed to determine what the failure is.

How do I fix abs lights on Isuzu 300lx tdi.Performed diagnostic test shows both rear sensors faulty.

well if it says they are bad, they are,
but let me define bad.
1: damaged in any way, or its cable and plug
2: loose.
3: filthy, sensors so first step is to what, inspect them ; did you?> some can get contaminated, the sensor and the tone wheel inside must be clean too. if full of grease and dirt, correct that and true cause. and hidden damage there (takes looking)
4: The ABS controller sees them messing up.
also bad brakes can fool some ABS brains (controllers)
if the brakes drag, slip or grab , the ABS brain, dont know why
it only knows the pulses are WRONG. only humans can find out why, in truth. by inspections and tests. covered in the FSM book.

You dont have as scope to watch sensors. so why ask?
the FSM covers this,,,,, ever seen one.
log into alldata.com to see ABS chapters.

in all ABS failures (most) we inspect the brakes first.'
after all no ABS system can work with bad brakes, its a given.
how ever if your unstated code, listed in the FSM said.
the sensors is dead and stuck low, then it is.
see? the codes can be:
stuck low
stuck high
intermittent.
or acting odd.
depends on what code.?

Prius warning lights abs pressure brake

abs concern. abs light. also, red brake light. is this correct? drive axle was replaced. testing for abs codes can lead to a pinpoint test.
once codes are read, there may be a specific area indicated to run tests. since the wheel hub area was where the recent work was performed...i suggest looking at the abs exciter ring for the wheel speed sensor.if the teeth are broken off , and or smashed or flattened. the hub, or the ring attached may need correction. there may also be a speed sensor wire and sensor concern after working in that area. inspect the sensor, its wires, and the connectors that attach it to the wiring. take the result of the code check, pinpoint test, and physical condition of the parts into mind, and decide. report your findings. you will need a good quality DVOM test meter to perform electrical tests. and guided diagnostic from the applicable service manual.

Having the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's would be a good first step . ABS light on codes are stored . Suggest you take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop that has the knowledge an testing equipment to diagnose the problem properly .
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)
The 4-wheel, 4-channel anti-lock brake system (ABS) consists of the following components:
  • ABS module
  • Front wheel speed sensor
  • Front wheel speed sensor ring (integral to the front wheel bearing)
  • Hydraulic control unit (HCU)
  • Rear wheel speed sensor
  • Rear wheel speed sensor ring (integral to the rear halfshaft)

I recently had new wheels and sensors put on the car. How do I test to insure the sensors are working properly?

You didn't say which sensors were changed I assume that it was ABS.

Anyway
Faulty sensors would normally be indicated by a MIL fault indication, the engine system will normally do a full check of sensors as you switch the ancillaries on.
You can have the brake system tested at your local service station. Or test youself on a suitable clear road by driving fast then braking very hard, you should feel the ABS system pulse though the brake pedal.

I've changed all my brake parts awhile back but now I'm getting a warning lights for my ABS system on my 2005 X3. Not clear why the light is on, and the dealer is no help.

  • ABS is Antilock Braking System. Basically it prevents your wheels from locking up and skidding out of control when you stomp on the brakes. On older vehicles you would pump the brakes with your feet manually but with ABS this happens automatically.

  • ABS while part of the braking system is not something that would be addressed during a brake job. The ABS sensor are inside the hub. You would need to remove the wheel to access this.

  • If your ABS light is going on then you either have a failure in the power feed to your ABS sensor or the ABS an sensor is failing. Your BMW should have an ABS sensor on every hub. On occasion a brake light being out can cause an ABS light to come on the dash but this is a rare occasion.

  • To test your ABS sensor you remover the wheel and in the top of the HUB (bearings) you will see the sensor and connector. Remove the connector and check for resistance with a multi meter.

  • I'm concerned the dealership could not help. With that light on the should be able to hook a scanner up the the vehicle and see what exactly is wrong and where. You may want to consult a different dealership. You can test things just as easily.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

My abs light stays on 1995 chevy G20 van and have to replace front brakes every 6 months but rear brakes show no wear and are atleast 3 yrs old. On slick pavement right front brake sometimes locks when...

I'd be checking the sensor (ABS) at that wheel, (right front) and adjusting rear brakes to proper clearance, as well as inspect them for proper operation with wheels off.

Abs indicator lamp is always on...

Likely one of the wheel sensors. Check that the master cylinder reservoir and ABS unit have enough brake fluid. When the light is on, ABS is disabled, the brakes should continue to work just like a car without ABS.
