Note: Since I just got the DST 1000-0141 error when running the self-test on my laptop: This code apparently may also just mean that the HD does not contain Dell's hidden "diagnostics" partition. (Which I didn't create on my brand new replacement HD. So depending on the context this may not actually point to a HW issue at all.)

then why not ask dell.com this, they have great forum why ask here. and is 6 years late your answer, all this is in the manual if you can read.1000 0141
the PC is a relic, now, and the old hdd has special blade connector, and if not fitted the hdd will be dead.
    these hdd are not standard.
    and uses this blade adpater
if not connected the hDD will be dead.

  • Anonymous Dec 10, 2019

    141 means
    HDD 100% bad.
    or not connected
    inspect the connnection carefully,
if the hdd is silent it is bad.
if the hdd is clicks loudly it is bad.
if the DTS fails it is bad.
easy no? and more ask we can test any HDD in docking SATA drive box.

Buy a new hard drive and clone your existing drive to it.The drive is headed for failure

Getoff is wrong, you can not clone bad hdd data to any new drive, ever. it's silly to try.

it's not headed to, it is for sure bad.
if the SMART tests fail, the drive is bad.
    end story there.
the next that to do is try go back up data, from the old drive, expect data loss..
    then buy new drive
    and load the OS fresh
    there is no other way.

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2019

And cloning XP 6 to 18 years ago is even more nutz, XP is virus magnet.(extreme)
Put w10-32 bit on it, even runs on Dell D520 here. (with correct CPU)

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2019

    w10-32b
Can ever run on 2004 PC, 4GB mem. best.
    eg: Pentium 4, P- 520J E0 stepping on up.
that is the oldest that runs 32bit W10, have proof, and Celerons, mostly not that era.
the P4 that oldest that runs w10-64bit
    is: P4 HT 531 up, G1 Prescott.
June 2005 released. yes this old and 5x1 all work. I have here 551 running 64bit ! w10

Hi,
The short DST test is generally the failure of the HDD,It would giive you code next to it , that would something like 1000-0146,or 1000-0141 etc. Do give that code and I would let you know the exact failure

Thanks

SOURCE: D610 DST Short Status Test Fail

It appears your hard disk has died and it may not be possible for you to retrieve your data.
Remove your hard drive from the laptop and insert it into an USB harddrive adapter, (they are not expensive and you can use it later as a external hard drive). Then plug it into the USB port of a working computer. The computer should/may see it as an external drive, if you are lucky you will be able to copy your data, if not, you are out of luck.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.

SOURCE: My Dell Latitude D830 will not boot up?

Your boot up needs to be repaired...follow the following repair and you should get booted back up. I do believe however that you are losing your hard drive, so watch it carefully and think about getting a backup for your files.

Windows Start-up Errors
Step one, you need a Windows XP CD. If you only have a recovery disk set like the ones from HP or Compaq they will not do what you need done. Under normal circumstances however, you can use a Dell disk because the Operating system is on a stand-alone disk. All retail versions are also acceptable as well as upgrade disks. For a rule of thumb, if the disk has the Microsoft hologram it should work. You can order a boot up floppy disk from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 with this file, if you know how, you can use “ImageBurn” to burn the file into an ISO file which can be burned to a disk. Now make sure your computer boots to the cd rom first. If you know how to do this skip on down, if you don’t, while the computer is first starting up and you see the manufacturers splash screen, tap F12 (some computers it’s F9, others it may be another key, you may have to watch and see if the computer lists the key strokes for getting to the boot menu. If you still cannot find it, boot into the BIOS settings and change your boot order there. Save your settings and exit, the computer will now seek the cd rom as its boot source first.
Place your Windows disk in the computer and start it up. When you see the test at the top of the page “Press Any Key To Boot From CD” Just hit the space bar to activate. The next screen you will see will most likely be a Windows setup screen, when you see this press the “R” key to get to the recovery console. It will get there, it may take a little time, patience. Once it loads you will be given a choice of Windows installations, there should only be one, if there are more, always pick number one. It may ask for an administrators password, if you have not set this particular password, then just leave it blank and press enter. The next prompt you see is:
C:\Windows>
You need to type the following:
cd \
hit enter. Pay close attention to the spacing between the characters. There is a space between the character “d” and the “\”
You are now at the ROOT of the drive, this is where basic commands can be given and changed. You should now see the following:
C:\>
Now type the following:
CHKDSK /R
Hit the enter key.
The chkdsk /r command also includes the P command and will also look for lost recoverable information in bad sectors.
There are occasions depending on how corrupt the system is, that this process could take several hours, so be patient with it.
Now, after chkdsk has run type the following:
FIXBOOT
Hit the enter key.
It may prompt you with a warning, that’s ok, just continue. When fixboot has finished, type: EXIT hit enter and windows will reboot. When the system reboots, tap the F8 key during this time and you will see the multi-boot menu come up. Scroll to the title “Last Know Good Configuration” and hit the enter key. If you were having some simple drive errors this should have fixed them.

Dst short test fail

DST Means: Drive Self Test. What happened here was when your laptop booted the Hard drive does a short self test on itself to make sure its still alright. If your drive is not functioning like it should, the test will fail. So needless to say, your hard drive has crashed. To solve this problem you will need to replace the hard drive with any 2.5" Notebook ATA hard drive of your choosing. Then after you have the drive installed the new hard drive, use the disks that came with your laptop to reinstall Windows. If you do not have the disks, you can use any Windows XP CD that you can get.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 won't boot up. It keeps

Hi:
The DST error code 1000-1046 is definitely a failing hard drive. ..I am not sure why your laptop is not recognizing a CD in the drive, but you should go into your BIOS settings, and in boot sequence, make sure that the CD drive is the first boot device. If you can't boot from a CD, you are not going to get very far with installing a new hard drive...

SYSTEM WON'T BOOT UP COMES TO A REGISTRY ERROR AND DUMPS MEMORY TO DISK. DIAGNOSTIC TEST GETS FAIL ON DST SHORT TEST ERROR CODE1000-0146

That error code is in relation to the hard drive beginning to go bad, If it is still in warrenty call dell, if not and you have any data you need to try and retrieve taking it to a qualified shop that can put the drive into another machine or boot with a utility cd to try and get your files is recommended, either way you are going to have to get a new drive.

Dell latitude d600

Greetings AROD718,

This error message is telling you that your hard-drive is nearing OR has already failed.

I would contact a buddy or go somewhere local to get Data recovery ASAP or if that is not important to you start shopping for a new hard-drive.

Hard drives are not very expensive and are simple to install, if you need further assistance please reply back!

Good luck,

Shawn
