Why can't i move stitch length dial

I moved the stitch length dial to 0 and now i cannot move the dial at all (it seems "locked") and the reverse lever doesn't work (you can move it but it is not working either). Both of these problems occurred at the same time.

On the 8280, the lever for reversing the stitching appears to be on the front of the machine, above and slightly to the right of the needle.

Are you certain that the pattern selector is set for straight stitch and not buttonhole?

Turn the handwheel so that the needle is up and the take-up lever is in it's highest position. Then turn the pattern selector knob through all of the patterns back and forth a few times. Finally, select straight stitch and see if the length works. If not, need to take it to a repair person to determine the course of action.

Is you presser foot down all the way? Have you looked at your manual for dial settings? I was kind of confused when I saw how you had to set you stitch selector, double check that it is on the lines with the circle in the middle and not on something else. If, that don't work, take it back to the where you bought it.

I think that it is your timing messed up and you have to take it in for service because it requires expertise and special tools. Unfortunately, it is usually expensive unless it is under warranty.

Easiest way to make a buttonhole...manual does not tell much info

Easiest way is to create a bar tack at one end of the buttonhole (widest stitch width and stitch length set to 0). Stitch maybe 4 or 5 stitches.
Then move needle all the way to the left, set stitch length to very short (maybe somewhere between 0 & 1), width to slightly less than half, stitch forward to the end of the buttonhole.
Then make another bar tack (as above). Move needle all the way to the right, set to less than half width, short stitch length, and stitch in REVERSE to first bar tack. To tie off, set width to 0 and length to 0 and stitch 2-3 times in place. Raise presser foot, pull gently on fabric and clip threads.

Try turning the flywheel and operate the reverse lever at the same time. Some machines need to be at a certain point in the stitch cycle for the reverse lever to be used.

Shorten your stitch in reverse the machine can't do a stitch that long in reverse. Also google your make and model machine and the word Manual so you can properly learn to use the machine safely.

Setting stitch length

Get some scrap fabric. One dial is for the width of the zig zag stitch, the other dial is for the length of any stitch. First set both to ZERO. It won't move then set one to half way. This will show you which dial is which. If it is the width dial. You'll get a bar tack. If it is the length dial you'll get straight stitches.

Looking for the reverse button on a necchi bu nova

There is no reverse button, it is a lever. The stitch length lever also reverses the feed dogs - when down, it runs forward - at zero, it does not feed at all and when moved up, it reverses the machine. Set your stitch length by loosening the thumbscrew on the vertically moving lever and sliding the plate into position while moving the lever up to the desired mark. Tighten the screw and move the lever down to sew - to reverse just move the lever up until it hits the stop to sew the same stitch length in reverse.

Viking 2000 6430? sewing machine, only sews in reverse.

Your stitch length dial is stuck. Your machine is in need of oil. If you open the back of your machine and see the bit that moves when you turn you stitch length dial. oil that bit and warm it with your hair dryer. It should become loose. It take a bit of warming and working the oil into the machine. You have to repeat this process a few times.

I do have the service manual at [email protected]

I want to know which knob I use to make the stitching narrower

there are generally two variable controls .. one adjusts the stitch length (distance between stitches measured in stitches per inch) ... the second is stitch width .. that adjusts how far the zigzag moves left and right .. thats usually just a number from 0 to 10 or so .. 10 would be maximum width .. 0 would be used for straight stitch ..
so you need to adjust the stitch width control to make the stitching narrower .. the controls are called different things on different brand sewing machines .. if you have the brand and model number then there may be instruction booklets available ...
