Sears has the best parts and repair website around (even for non-sears items).
Go to the Sears Parts website (link below) and enter the dryer model. It will bring up a visual schematic of everything.
You won't find a repair manual for any specific model - that's something only the service techs get (or understand since it really is technical), but a dryer is pretty simple.
The schematic on the web site will let you see how it goes together and some apart, and as you take it apart you'll simply need to look for parts that look burned or damaged, and take it from there.

SOURCE: Maytag Neptune Dryer with strong "burned electrical wiring" smell

Sounds like the motor went out. Before trying to start it it needs to be inspected. If you are not comfortable opening up the cabinet then I would would recommend calling a service tech. If you need further assistance please let me know.

Maytag washer MAV6650aww burning smell

OK, this model has a known issue with a bad pump design. The bearing on the pump goes bad and will lock up. The burning smell is the belt trying to turn the pump. Look under the unit and see if you see rubber residue at the pump. Here is the pump to order. To replace the pump, tilt the unit back and remove the belt. Remove the back lower left side access panel. Remove the 2 hoses, then the 3 bolts that hold the pump down. Replace in reverse order. The pump is a new design it looks completely different but will last you the life of the unit.

could be as simple as a blown thermal fuse.  most places will allow credit for a service call toward purchase of a new machine if repairs are too costly

Maytag Neptune Dryer smells like burning rubber or plastic...

The drum belt could be rubbing on something inside. Does the dryer make a squeeking noise? Se if there are small rubber particles on the bottom, this will indicate a deteriating belt.

Sparks in the Dryer

Ken,
Those blue sparks are coming from the element grounding out to the frame (specifically, the back side of the rotating drum). Obviously, this isn't gonna fix itself. There may be a "re-string" kit for yours, but often the only way to buy the element is to buy the whole heater assy., and w/ GE that's generally not that cheap.

Another thing (aside from cost) is the absolute nightmare this dryer is to repair. I've done probably 200 of these and I dread it each and every time. Then again, when I run these service calls I'm limited to working in the (generally small and cramped) laundry rooms that they are in... if you move it out to a garage where there's plenty of room it still won't be great, but it would be optimal.

If you choose to repair it, write back with the exact model number and I'll look up the parts and step you through the repair.

Our Kenmore HE3 front loading dryer gives off a fuel smell inside

When I had the back off of the dryer I did notice one thing that looked a little unusual. The vent
pipe, which the flame of the burner travels through, ( running from the burner to the back of the
dryer ) was painted, inside and out. Some of the paint was cracked and slightly bubbled, as though
it was melting from heat, and there actually was a small pile of soot laying there. I wiped off as much
of the paint as I could with a rag, and vacuumed it out, and put the dryer back together and ran it.
After running the dryer for a while we no longer have the smell. I don't really know if that was the problem
or not, but at least the smell is gone.

Burning Smell - smoking coming out of it

I believe we tracked it down to the pressure switch mounted on the drain pump. The device had a strong electrical burn smell and is positioned where it could easily have smoked the basket. We're putting the washer back into service and if I have a recurrence I will post the information. BTW ... Replacement was simple and the part was $26 including shipping.
