Just as washer is to start the agitation cycle a plastic smell and smoke filled laundry room. Washer stopped working
OK, this model has a known issue with a bad pump design. The bearing on the pump goes bad and will lock up. The burning smell is the belt trying to turn the pump. Look under the unit and see if you see rubber residue at the pump. Here is the pump to order. To replace the pump, tilt the unit back and remove the belt. Remove the back lower left side access panel. Remove the 2 hoses, then the 3 bolts that hold the pump down. Replace in reverse order. The pump is a new design it looks completely different but will last you the life of the unit.

Pull the unit forwardand lean it back about 45 degrees. You'll have to play with it a bit, but once it's far enough out, it will lean back without you having to hold it. Remove and inspect the belt(s) are they in good condition? Next, check the pulleys (wheels) underneath. Do they turn? One is for your pump, one is for your transmission and one is for the motor. (in case one doesn't turn, you'll know what portion needs to be worked on). Also check the track on your pulley the belt sits in. Is it dammaged or worn?

I believe we tracked it down to the pressure switch mounted on the drain pump. The device had a strong electrical burn smell and is positioned where it could easily have smoked the basket. We're putting the washer back into service and if I have a recurrence I will post the information. BTW ... Replacement was simple and the part was $26 including shipping.
