70HP JOHNSON OUTBOARD doesn't want to run with cowl on.

Motor seems to choke out if the cowl is put on while the engine is running, but it runs fairly well without it on.

We ran into this issue with our Honda 15. Upon close inspection, the exhaust coupler had corroded away which allowed exhaust gases to accumulate under the cowling which resulted in the motor choking itself out trying to eat exhaust gases. No air= no go.

Something to look for anyway.
Hope this helps you out.

1974 70hp Johnson outboard,hi there I was coming back from fishing when my motor just stopped it had been running fone before this happened. I tried to start it but would not fire had plenty of gas in...

Check the ignition system, check for spark at the plug, if it has no spark check your points, ignition coil, etc. If it has spark you need to check the fuel system so that's gonna boil down to an obstructed fuel line, a clogged fuel filler, or something in the carburetor(s). That should lead you to figuring it out my friend, best of luck. It's always either air, fuel, or spark! If one or more of the 3 are missing it'll never run(not right if it does), those basics always apply to an internal combustion engine of any age or size, whether carbureted or fuel injected. Thanks and Best of Luck

I have trouble starting my motor but then runs great..when you turn it off for a few minutes I have to lift the warm up lever to restart

Generally on most two stroke outboard engines you have to choke the engine every time you start it. Also let it warm up for awhile before heading out. Johnson/ Evinrude are known for this.

Johnson outboard stalls when it warms up

Little Johnson outboards are famous for being very easy to start, So- first pump up the gas, then set the throttle open to the neutral stop -pull thru once -then set the choke to fully closed (look down the carb and see if it is) and pull thru 2 more times- open the choke. try again --If it is not running by now you have a bad ignition, or the engine has no compression. - very likely if you are running the wrong spark plugs. You may have some shattered reed valves.

See if the spark plugs are getting wet with fuel.

How do i replace the water pump in a 2005 150 hp evinrude outboard motor

Take the cowling off. Also drop the foot. There wil be a stainless linkage rod that runs the length of the motor that you will have undo to drop the foot. The water impeller will be inside a stainless casing that you will have to disassemble.
