The screen shows the wall paper for about two seconds then blacks out. The power light remains green indicating that it is not in sleep mode. The monitor is used as a secondary extended screen.

Your monitor may be configured for a mode that is not compatible with your display device. Start your PC in Safe mode by holding down the F8 key from a cold boot. If your display comes up in 640x480 mode, then your problem is your display settings and can be corrected by right-clicking on your desktop, selecting PROPERTIES and then the SETTINGS tab. If new settings do not work check your SLEEP settings in the control panel to make sure you are not "hibernating". Failing all these, re-install the drivers for your display adapter from safe mode. If your monitor did not come up in safe mode (remained black) enter your BIOS (CMOS) settings and ensure that your primary display is set correctly. After these non-invasive things fail, take it back and get it covered under warranty, you have a hardware problem.

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.
Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

I know this is stupied but I had the same problem and it is fixed now - here goes techies - I called HP and of course they were giving me the story out of warrenty - i could pay to talk to them and all the other stuff. They had no clue and neither did I. However in the discussion i had to give them the model number "turned the thing over to find it" When i opened it and tried again it worked. I then moved it and had the same problem - once again turned it over and it worked. I have no clue what I did but I am going to take it in to have it looked at. Can someone tell me what happened?
