1)First press the button marked 'LOCK' on the remote control (left of center)
if that doesn't work
2)Press the button marked VCR on the left top of remote control.

If it is still locked it means some one has disabled the remote control by pressing the CH+ button and Play button simultaneously. To release this, Carry out the same again ie..press both the CH+ button and the Play button together.
This should cure the problem.

Display shows SAFE, and vcr doesnt turn on.

You simply need to press and hold down the power button on your remote for 6-7 seconds. Doing this will take the VCR out of safe mode.

When safe show on the screen, it actually means that the child lock feature is on.

All you have to do is press the child lock button again on the remote and it should flash "OFF" on the screen.

Hope you have the remote :)

SAFE

Pro-Tect Plus™ Locking Feature
To disable VCR usage or to protect set timer recordings, the unit can be locked so that the
buttons on the VCR or remote control don’t work.
• To Lock: Press and hold either the remote control’s ON•OFF or VCR button until SAFE
appears in the display to indicate Pro-Tect Plus is active. SAFE also appears if the VCR is
turned on while the feature is activated.
To Unlock: Press and hold either the remote control’s ON•OFF or VCR button until SAFE
disappears from the front panel display. Unlocking is the only way to use the VCR.

Vcr will not work

Try pressing down the vcr or Aux button for a long time. Then try pressing down power button on remote for a long time. Try info or display button for long time. After I fiddled around with these for a long time it worked.

"SAFE"

Greetings Spock! Although I worked for an authorized rca service depot for 12 years, and worked on many, I can't remember the solution to your problem, and Thompson Consumer Electronics (RCA/GE) don't even accknowledge they ever sold vcr's..I went to RCA.com and your model comes up as "does not exist"...Anyway...I know I've worked on that model, and if you have the book, check the section about parental lock, or Key lock...your RCA could very well be Samsung inside, and if so press and hold the tv/vcr button for 5 seconds and that will release the key lock feature. It is there so if you set the timer, or just don't want the kids messing with it, you can lock all the key functions, and the unit will do nothing except display "safe" Hope this helps...Live long & prosper!
