This is a common fault seen with VCRs. If the drum motor head gets misted, the due sensor connected with it will sense it and will show "Dew" on display. Let the set switch ON for some time, say over 2 hours or so. The switch it OFF and the switch it ON again. If this process doesn't help you, the dew sensor circuit inside the VCR section of your combo must be checked well. It is not a user repairable item. Contact any experienced service technician or RCA Authorised Service Center at your town. OK.

is the dvd a store bought disc or a burnt dvd? If the disc is a store bought disc I unfortunately can't help you. But if the dvd you are trying to play is burned from dvd burner you are most likely using the wrong type of burnable dvd. There are two types of dvd's you can burn, DVD-R and DVD+R. You need to make sure which one you dvd player can play, some play one or the other, some play both. I have also heard of some older ones that can't play any type of burned disc. RCA video cables handle analog signals. HDMI cables carry digital video signals. You need a converter. If you are using a component video converter, check if you swapped two of the three RCA video cables. (There are some A/V projectors that can do the translation of RCA and HDMI internally. Your other option, and yes I know this is a silly answer, when you want to mute the TV is to simply press the volume down button to zero then turn it back up when you want sound.
