Red screen(rear projector tv)

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

CONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1 - Failure in the convergence circuits. ( common problem )

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Your alignment is off. Go to the set up menu then convergence. hit right and you will be in the convergence menu. select the color that is not in alignment. The green line does not move. if blue and green are lined up the line will be cyan. if red and green are lined up the line will be yellow. when all three are lined up the color will be light. 1. Bring Up 1 Projector Light 2. Bring Your Color Convergence + Sign and Should Be Center In Your TV 3. If Not Adjust Center with The 2 Tabs Just Above That Projector Tube You Have Lighted 1 Tab Will Move + Sign Horizontal Then Roll The Other Vertical Then Roll..U Will See--" 4. Once Your + Sign Is Center Turn Up Your 2 Other Projectors Make Sure They Are Able To Adjust Across The + Sign You used 1st Make Sure the 2 Other + Signs Move Left And Right And Up And Below The Vertical and Horizontal Lines. If Not Adjust There Tab to Make This Possible. 5. Using Your REMOTE Converge The + Signs Together. ---------------- IF YOU MESSED WITH THE CONVERGENCE BOARD ------------------- 6. Now Lower The 2 Lights So Your 1st Projector Is Lighted 7. Bring Up A Menue On Your TV -- Look At It ...Are The Lettering Center and Square ..?? 8. Hey If Your Projector Colors When Looking Through The Rear Of The TV Are Not Equal With Take And loosen The Wing Nuts And Turn The Lens To Focus the Color and Make Narrow Or Wide....All 3 - Equal DO NOT GET UPSET THIS WILL TAKE TIME MAYBE ALL DAY SO RELAX HAVE FUN" Do Not go Sticking Your Hand Into The TV While TV Is Plugged into The Wall" ---

We need a better description of what you mean by shadowing. However I am assuming: 1. You mean it ''bleeds'' off to the right when you have something with a hard red/blue drive. 2. When you turn the contrast and color down a bit it gets better. unfortunatly I cannot tell you how to fix convergence, but I can think of some other possibilities. In this case the red/blue emmision of the crt is dying off and going into saturation when driven hard. To fix, replace with a new picture tube/crt. In some cases you can get a little more life out of that tube (with a watchable picture) by having the screen, focus, cathode bias, and drives slightly readjusted. It will take someone with experience in doing these adjustments on a weak tube to get it looking as good as possible. Given the construction of the cathodes (guns) in that crt, only a very low level crt reactivate should be tried on it. The hard rejuv most crt testers give is highly likley to completely destroy the cathode on that crt.

I've posted this solution several times but here goes. Try setting up the convergence through the menu by accessing the convergence setup menu. If this fails to work you have a bad digital convergence box and need a tech to replace it. About $60 to $100 fix.
