Question about Sony KP-53S75 53" Rear Projection Television
The red on my Sony KP-53S75 tv started bending and isn't lined up with other colors, giving the old 3-D glasses effect, double words and images. I covered the red lense and except for the missing red the picture is crisp and clear. I have read about the convergence ics and have ordered Sanyo replacements. I am a pretty good fix-it guy but want to know exactly what I need to do to discharge caps, replace ics, check fuses and resistors etc. While I'm in there, how do I clean the lenses and mirror(s)and adjust picture after? Thanks for any info.
Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.
Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )
Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence Sony KP-53S75 Red convergence problem - 2c07611.pngad and should be replaced. This is a common problem. Solution #1
You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.
Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy
Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Solution #2
What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

To discharge the caps just unplug the tv and wait about ten minuites. to replace the ics i use solder wick to remove the solder. insert new ics and solder. after you have replaced them the convergence should pop back into place. to clean the guns just wipe off the top of the lens. if the mirror is clean just leave it as any little blemmish will show on the front screen. very rarely the stk ics dont fix the problem. if this is the case there are a few resistors and fuses next to th ics. to check them just use a cotinuity testor. if any of them are open replace them. the resistors and fuses usually run in groups of 4. four for each color.
