This is a desk top system, when I safely remove the SD card the reader is goon I have used different SD and compact flash cards and they all do it, I'm using Windows 7. It worked fine until last month and this started.
When you remove your sd cards in the new windows 7 update, the card reader removes itself from the list of connected devices on the computer. I have a windows 7 ;laptop with an sd card reader in it and it does the same thing. if it is still reading the cards with no problem, there is nothing to be worried about. it is like hooking up a flash drive to your computer, then it dissapears after you disconnect it. Still use the safely remove function on the windows pc. It helps keep the cards healthy so to speak.
SOURCE: MSI Wind Netbook sd card reader failure
For both an MSI Wind running Windows and Mac OSX 10.5.(4,5,6) do the following.
Shut down the MSI Wind.
Remove the power cord, any USB peripherals, and any SD cards in the slot.
Remove the Battery
Hold down the power key (with the battery removed for 2-5 seconds)
Release the Power Key
Insert the Battery
Insert the the Power Supply plug
((do not insert any USB or SD card yet))
Power on the Wind
Now, insert the SD card-it should now show up on the desktop (in OSX).
That should do it.
Now insert any USB dongles/cables etc...
You have reset the PMU and bus start up.
Any more Wind Questions?

go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart and such, you can get a SD reader/ writer (such as Targus, about $9 USD, what I use) and put your SD card into it, then plug into USB (USB 2.0 is current standard, but will work with USB 1.1, just slower). PC will ask if you want to play/record from/to the removable drive, select "take no action" then go to the "my computer" icon (or what ever you have named it) double click the drive letter for the flash/SD card (E,F,G etc.). open the file folder that you want to copy from <usually something like "100MEDIA" or such> (I STRONGLY recommend that you "COPY FILE(S)" and NOT "move file(s)" as that if something crashes you still HAVE the orig. files) select to copy to the correct drive letter/ file name(s) and PLEASE remember to "remove hardware safely" or you could KILL the files and/or the drive(s) that you were using. (did that TWICE before I realized what I was doing wrong). good luck!

If your Storio displays a blank blue screen upon start up,
please perform the below procedure to restore the Storio back to factory
standard - please note this procedure requires the use of a blank SD memory
card and some form of SD card reader (either a port on the PC or a USB SD
reader)
•Please firstly download the SD Card Recovery Creator
•Insert your SD card into the SD reader port on your PC or
via a USB SD card reader - this should appear as a removable disk under your
computer menu
•Double click the
Vtech Icon located in your downloads folder to run the program - Click Continue
•Click 'Make Recover
Program Card' then click 'Next'
•From the drop down
menu, select the removable disk drive allocated to the SD card (drive E shown for demonstration purposes,
the actual drive allocated to your SD card may differ)
•The application will
now format the SD card with the Storio factory default operating system
•When the following
screen appears, remove the SD card and then re insert it into the SD port or
reader to complete the format
•Once the format is
complete the following confirmation will appear - please click OK and follow
steps 1-5 to finish restoring your Storio to factory standard.
•Please note, once
the process is complete, you will need to re run the program to 'revert' the SD
card back to a usable state
