great response, it worked but I am now hearing make some nasty shock noises upon looking a bit closer its frying caps so its toast... Thanks for the help but I am building a new computer now, as for this one is old and no longer worth even spending a few bucks on cap replacements. Thanks again

SOURCE: my dell optiplex gx200 bios can't boot

maybe try taking out the cmos battery located in your case, looks like a small watch battery, that will clear bios settings and start from scratch, if there is no battery then there is a jumper sequence to do this

SOURCE: Bios default password

The BIOS default password is just blank, and it is not asked.

When you set a bios password, you are asked to enter a value, therefore if bios is asking the password, the password had been changed.

To reset the bios password if you do not know the password you need to access to motherboard and temporarily remove battery for few seconds.
Removing battery will reset bios and delete the password.
Unplug power cord before accessing the motherboard, and try not touching the motherboard with your finger.
Put battery back in place before restarting computer.

My GX520 pwr light is green, on the board is an amber Led, the somputer boots up, it goes the full process, until the arrow appears on the monitor. no Iconn are displayed on the desktop

If your computer gets to that stage, then I would guess you have an OS ( Operating System ) problem. Try booting from your XP installation CD. If that works then you may have to re-install Windows.

Sounds like you may have multiple problems. Suggest trying to eliminate possible causes by removing components. Remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged. Remove the components one at a time and see if the LED's change.

Unable to upgrade onboard graphics on dell gx520

Try disabling your onboard graphics in the BIOS. Some BIOS allow this. If you have a sound card, disable the onboard sound too. Count your beeps. they contain a code. Go online and "Google" bios codes. This should give you a starting point to diagnose the problem.
