NO channels now, we had some before!!!!!

I just bought the RCA analog to digital TV converter yesterday, my husband hooked it up last night, we get NO channels now. It is hooked up through the antenna, but do we need an external antenna on our house, or are there other solutions. Even with the manual search it still shows up NO SIGNAL.

Here is how you should have it connected.
1- Antenna (rabbit ears or whatever)
2- Converter box
3- Television

When you turn on the TV and the converter box, go to channel 3 on the TV. You should see the converter box signal there. If you do not see it try channel 4. Bring up the convert box menu and go through the AUTO SEARCH, not manual search. Now your box will search all the frequencies and add any stations that are in your area. Make sure you change channels with the converter box, not the tv. An antenna on the roof will still provide somewhat better range, but even rabbit ears will likely pick up something. If you still get no channels you could be too far away, digital signals have a shorter range than analog signals. You can check your local TV stations website or call to see if they are broadcasting digital yet.

I have the same problem. My Magnavox is shutting off every few minutes so I went out to buy RCA model today and sure enough no signals on RCA, after many scans and rechecking connects. So I put the Magnavox back and even though it shuts off every few minutes at least I have channels back. I guess I need cable or something before I crack up with a nervous brake down!

Also, you can cross reference your house on www.antennaweb.org to see how strong of an antenna you need. This site will also show you specific angles to point your antenna at for best reception. If you're less than 15 - 20 miles away from the stations you want, an amplified set of rabbit ears will do, any longer, and you will need a rooftop or something outdoors. The oldschool arial we've found has worked best.

How do I hook up Coby 5" black & white TV to my digital converter box ?

You will need a digital to analog converter which you can get at Radio Shack, Best Buy and most big box retail outlets or online. Your Coby is most likely analog and will require the digital signal to be converted to an analog signal from the digital converter box to the TV. UNLESS the digital converter box has analog (round connectors on the back) then you just need an analog RCA cable (which you can also get almost anywhere even your local CVS/Walgreens) to make the connection.

Have Problems with getting Channels?

You've not given us the manufacturer, make and model number, but I see 3 analog inputs on the left and the usb on the right. This tells me the analog audio and video signals must come from a dvd or vcr or tv-tuner. You say getting channels, so I'm assuming you've not hooked up to a digital ready tv hooked to cable or dish or digital converter. THERE ARE NO MORE ANALOG SIGNAL CHANNELS ANYMORE. Everything went digital in June 2009. So there you have it. If you don't have usable information going in, you can't get it out. try it with sterio audio and video from a digital tv that is receiving channels, and I think you'd then see sterio and video out of your pc. I have an RCA converter box hooked up to an RCA TV and a Sanyo VCR. The TV and VCR are set on Channel 3. The converter box is set on Channel 4 and the TV is also switched to CH 4 when viewing digital...

Basically, you cannot use the coax connections for both the VCR and the RCA converter box. I would hook up the phono/cinch connectors from the VCR to the TV if you can (these are also called RCA connectors, but I'm avoiding using that name so we dont confuse the digital receiver with a cable/connector name that is the same here). There should be a yellow one for video and red/white ones for left and right stereo. I believe the RCA converter comes with a three headed cable that can do this for you. With this configuration, you can set the TV to input on these connectors and the VCR should always output there. Once that is set, you can still use the converter box to receive the signal from your antenna, then run the coax to the VCR. Now, the VCR will always have to be set on channel 4 in your setup and you will need to manually change channels on the converter box for it to record a show. Does this make sense so far?

Insignia digital tv converter/indoor antenna no signal

Ok first I can save you some money. Take your "HDTV" antenna back. There is nothing different about the antennas needed receive analog and digital signals. If you got reception without your converter box, use the same antenna with your converter box.

Next let's see if there is a problem with the box. Hook up a television with the antenna. How many stations do you get? Now hook up the same television & antenna, but this time put the converter box between the antenna & the TV. Do not turn on the box. Now how many stations do you get? If the number is different, the box is not allowing the antenna signal to pass through. That is bad. You want your signal to pass through the box so you can still pick up stations that don't broadcast digitally. Some areas of the country will not be covered by digital stations from all major broadcasters when the changeover happens in Feb.

My suspicion is either you did not have the antenna hooked up to the converter box when you searched for channels OR you are in an area that is not yet broadcasting digitally.

I hope this helps you solve your problem. Thank you for using FixYa and feel free to add more questions here by using comments.

I hooked up my magnovox dtv converters to my bedroom and living room tv's. They come on, scan channels and give me 6 public broadcasting channels, which are very clear. BUT I can not get anything else! I...

You need to get a converter with an "analog passthrough". The magnavox converter that you have is blocking the analog signal from reaching your TV's tuner. The RCA converters that your friends have must have the analog passthough feature that not all converters have.
