Ipod problem - playing songs in order

I bought an Apple ipod shuffle (1st generation) last October. Over the past few months I've had a problem in playing songs in order on it. It starts to play a song and then suddenly stops and freezes. I've lost count the amount of times I've reset, restored, reinstalled it. Any ideas/solutions what the problem could be? Also I recently downloaded songs from itunes and until last week I could play these fine, but they are not even being recognised on the ipod (when away from the computer)

Thanks for the advice crazylarry, but it turned out that it was corrupted, which I thought it was. As I had only a month left under the year warranty, I decided to replace it with an ipod nano, as it was cheaper than sending it away ot get fixed (if they could fix it).

Shuffle is not working. Plays the song that it goes to and repeats. Even when it is manually adjusted it still plays the same song.

Sounds like you need a new hard drive, which has a little read-write disk in it that is getting finicky... just to get more use out of it lay it on side or other positions and hear if works ok...if so its diffently Hard drive. you know the sandisks are 2 gigs no moving parts why doesnt somebody put 20 together making 40 gigs and replace the failing Ipods!!??? just pure electronics and no moving parts and much smaller...not like a hard drive. I thought of this over 30 years ago looking at the first plug in video game.

I was given an i pod shuffle as a gift from a friend but when i went to apple support the i pod had been disabled. how do i fix it so that i can put my own apple itunes on. thanks anne marie

To reset iPod shuffle:
  1. Disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected).
  2. Move the switch on the iPod shuffle to the OFF position. Note that when iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible. ht1655_1.gif ht1655_2.gif ht1655b_3.gif ht1655--4th_shuffle-001-en.png
    1st generation 2nd generation 3rd generation 4th generation
  3. Wait five seconds. For iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation), wait ten seconds.
  4. Move the switch to the play in order or the shuffle position. The green stripe will be visible in either position. For iPod shuffle (2nd and 4th generation), slide the power switch on (and you can see the green stripe).
