I purchased a new, still in the box, Hobbylock (Pfaff) surger. I've read the manual cover to cover, I am metulious in following the instructions. The thread is pulling up through the throat plate where the needle goes in, then grabs the fabric and pulls in through the same hole to tangle with the feed dogs. I've spent no less than 5 hours on this, and two other seamstresses have had a go at it as well with no success. I am a professional tailor and seamstress. I've been sewing for 40 years, and have personally owned 8 Surgers over time and I'm very comfortable sewing and maintaining them. Please help!

Hi Jeanette! You have a Singer Featherweight--the best sewing machine ever made! (Mine dates from 1950/51 and I wouldn't trade it for the world.) These beautiful, sturdy machines were designed to be easily repairable at home, but you'll need a copy of the Service Manual (get the Instruction manual too, if you don't have one.) Go to www.singer-featherweight.com and check out what they have available.
I had a similar problem (needle thread not catching the bobbin thread) and the problem was that I hadn't put the needle in correctly (flat side to the left). Also, I will occasionally get thread wrapped around the bobbin housing--sewing along just great and then everything comes to a screeching halt. I'm not sure why that happens, but I'm getting pretty good at taking the bobbin housing apart. The manual is pretty clear on how to do it. You can contact me direct at [email protected] for more information.
Thanks!
Robbie

when the needle pulls the fabric into the feed dog you dont have enough fabric behund the neelde when you srart, and the fabric gets caught in the feed and the bobbin case underneath clean it out anf change the needle they often get bent after they get tangled in the thread and fabric

There has to be a problem in your threading or your needle. You may have the needle inserted backwards, flat side has to face rear or the needle is bent. Totally unthread your machine and make sure that there are no tangles and that it feeding the right way. Watch how they show your for threading and winding the bobbin, plus threading the bobbin. Good luck, but I truly think it is in your threading.

If the problem only started when you put a new spool in check that the spool is in the coirrect way round
The hobbylocks all thread in much the same fashion. There is a diagram for a four thread hobbylock on this website. It would be better if you found a Pfaff dealer to show you as it is quite complicated.

Once you have it threaded, always cut the old threads at the spool and knot new ones on and pull through. You will have to thread the needles as the knots will not pass through but it does save an awful lot of frustration when needing new colours on the spools.
