Hi, I've got a Sony DAV-DZ870W Home Theatre System and its now starting to play up. The unit turns on and everything works but within a few minutes it shuts itself down and you can hear the transformer turning off. After about 5 minutes you can then turn the unit back on. I've had a look at the capacitors and can't find any that have popped. Theres no warning on the LCD screen before it shuts down, i've had a look at all the connections and they seem ok no burnt edges or loose connections. Its not a speaker problem as theres nothing connected to the unit. So i'm stumped for ideas.. Any help would be much appreciated Cheers

You must run a Digital Optical cable from your PS3 to your reciever. Then press your function button on your recievers remote until you see SAT/CABLE on your recievers display. Next go to your PS3 settings and go to Sound settings, then Audio Output settings, and select Digital out (OPTICAL) then your done. This is the only way to get true digital sound from your PS3 to your reciever.
SOURCE: problems with hearing sound from bravia LCD tv through bravia DAV-HDX275 theatre system
The fiber optic port on back on your bravia tv is only for when your using a over the air antenna and watching local atsc channels in your local market. You need to run the fiber optic from your hd cablebox if it has one or your hd sat box if it has one. If you don't have a set top box with the fiberoptic port on it you can use a digital coax cable from the cable or sat box to sound system. The only other way to get sound if you don't have a cable or sat box is to run the red and white rca audio cable from the tv to the sound system and got to the audio setup on tv and turn the tv speakers off and you might have to adjust the audio to fixed instead of variable.

SOURCE: Sony DAV-FC7 squeals
I had the same problem....but it kept taking longer and longer for it to quiet down, then eventually it just kept whining and I couldn't take it anymore...I had to stop using it for tv and only used it for DVDs (it didn't whine on the dvd function). I was going to get rid of the unit because my old tv died and I had to buy a new flat screen high-def unit, which needs a surround system to do it justice. I then noticed the digital optical connection on the Sony DAV-FC7 as well as my new Direct TV HD-DVR. I bought the optical cable for about $15 and hooked it up....and voila...NO MORE WHINE! If you have the optical connection option....try that route...it might work for you as it did for me. Good luck
