Cannot format my optiplex 760 partition

My optiplex 760 is showing the dreaded blue screen of death. I've attempted to reinstall the XP operating system on the default partition without success (system indicated that the formatting of the partition wasn't successful). Then I attempted to delete the partition and that wasn't successful either. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi.

Because you are unable to format or delete the partition then I'm afraid that this is a strong indication that you need to replace the hard drive, this is probably due to bad sectors and clusters that the drive cannot read or write to.

Regards.

You can also run Dell diagnostics by restarting the computer and tap the F12 key, Select "Boot to Utility Partition" using the arrow keys. Press "Enter" to boot to the customized Dell diagnostic partition. Press the "Tab" key to move the selection to "Test System." Press "Enter." Dell Diagnostics will start to run.

Yep, I was thinking that replacing the HD was going to be the route to take. Tried the diag utility after the partition format attempt and deletion attempt, but it didn't run. Thanks for chiming in on this issue.

Would it matter if I replaced with a SATA II or SATA III?

if you don't have the cd with the drivers and utilities, then you can download the drivers online with another computer. (you will need a thumb drive or cd to save it on) you will also need to make sure you know what brand of ethernet card your computer came with. once you get that ethernet card working, you can get online and download the remaining drivers, possibly through windows update. be sure to select custom update, not express, so it will search for the hardware drivers for you.

SOURCE: Dell Optiplex GX150 Factory Settings Restore Partition...

This is from the Dell support site. You were correct in pressing ctrl+f11 but perhaps you did not press at the correct time. If in following these first two steps you do not get the recovery console, it may not have been installed on your computer.

1 Turn on the computer.
2 When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
3 In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.
4 When a warning message appears stating that all data will be lost, click Confirm, or press <Tab> to highlight Confirm and then press <Enter>.

The Progress window will appear. Once the restore process starts, Dell PC Restore by Symantec usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes to finish.

When the restore process is complete, the following message will appear:
The system recovery process was successful.
5 Click Finish or press <Tab> to highlight Finish and then press <Enter> to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.
