Here's a little more. This problem can also be caused by dirt or sand getting into the lens worm gear. Try these in order (know some of these sound silly): 1) turn off the camera, remove the flash card and batteries, then reinsert them. 2) turn the camera on and off with the AV cable inserted, 3) moderately rap the camera with the palm of your hand, 4) gently pull or push on the lens to try to overcome the lens jam, then restart. If all the above has not worked, AND if the A4XX camera is no longer under warranty, AND if this problem did not result from the camera being dropped, here's how to fix it, and it's relatively easy: http://homepage.mac.com/jpelling/page0/page0.html By the way, don't know Justin, but he did a very nice job showing how to open the camera case and clean out the grit and sand from the camera lens drive gear. Make sure you send him an email to thank him

SOURCE: "BUSY" Problem

I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Rebel XS.

Installation of this Canon EOS Rebel XS firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:

  1. Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
  2. The message, "Err 99 Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to<OFF> and <ON> again or re-install the battery", appears on the camera's LCD monitor, and after the above operation is carried out,the LCD monitor displays in a language that is different from the actual language setting.
See the firmware instructions and download the firmware upgrade by following these Fixya Tips :

  1. Follow this link to download a pdf version of the firmware installation instruction guide.
  2. Follow this link to download the Windows Version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.
  3. Follow this link to download the MAC version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.
  4. Follow this link to download the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D Instruction Manual.

I hope that helps.

This sounds like a stuck shutter, with the shutter stuck open. See this link, trying Fix #5A. If Fix 5A does not work, your camera is then likely experiencing a broken ribbon cable to the shutter control. Unfortunately, repairing that cable would be more costly than the value of the camera. Also, repairing the cable yourself is not recommended as finding a replacement cable would be just as costly, and the actual repair is very difficult.

How can I stop displaying the photo information on the view finder?

In the viewfinder? The viewfinder will always display things like the f/stop and the shutter speed while you're preparing to take a picture. This cannot be turned off.

If you mean on the monitor on the back when reviewing your photos, simply press up/down on the multiselector to cycle through the different views of your photos.

You have to know the MODE your camera is in. If you have it in the wrong mode you may not be able to take a photo in some conditions. You typically cannot take a photo of the moon on any auto setting the moon will be a white blob. The moon almost has to be taken manually.

My A540 clicks like it takes a picture but nothing shows on the display screen. When I take the memory card out and insert to computer the frame of pictures show but the photos are black.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

But if you do notice shutter movement, then this would then likely be a CCD imager failure. It would in that case require Canon service to repair (1-800-OK-CANON).

When taking photos with the camera set at the shutter priority, all the photos come out black. I have a lens with a f/2.8, but the on the screen on top the camera, the f reading is showing LO. I have...

You mention everything except the shutter speed. When the aperture shows "Lo" it's saying that there isn't enough light at your selected shutters peed to produce a good exposure. That's why you have dark photos. You may need to bump the ISO up higher, or use exposure compensation to make it work well. For a football game, 1/750 is nice, but you can usually make 1/500 work.

Shutter not closing when taking photo

Try to take video or take picture in dark conditions. If video records correctly, then the CCD sensor is broken. Contact HP and ask if they would repair it for free.

Error Code

No, it's not an error. What this display indicates, is the availability of the total number of photos you want to take. If the display says, "r06", then you are in JPEG Mode. If it says "r03", then you are either 1) in RAW Mode, or 2) have your Noise Reduction on (see FAQ #2). As you take a few photos in succession, you will notice the indicator drops by how many photos you took.

Camera seems to operate, won't record photos

there are two possible causes for the problem. 1). a bad CCD or 2) shutter not working. in both the cases you have to contact pro. repairer to fix the problem.
