Installed more ram and now can't find the hard drive

I installed 1 m more ram and everything seemed fine for a while. Then one day it simply wouldn't boot. I've used the XP Home boot disk and have run setup, but still can't get it to find the HD (WD 800JD Caviar). Got a new SATA cable and have tried all the SATA data plugins - nothing. The HD is getting power and under Setup it is listed as an option for Primary Boot. Setting it as primary doesn't do any good either. I had the HD checked and was told that it was not corrupted. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Pull out the new RAM chips and install the old one or ones and see if it boots ok. I had this same problem. This can also be caused by no using matched sets of RAM chips. In my case I added one and used the factory one as well, caused the same issue as you have.

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: i have a 320 as my primary and i want 2 ad a 500

The SATA Drives do not need jumpers to set primary and secondary drive positions. Each sata drive gets it's own connection to the motherboard. Check you motherboard diagram, and make sure the 320GB drive is plugged into the 1st sata controler, and that the 500GB drive is connected to the 2nd.

try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive this should schedule the task on restart then defragment your hard drive

How many gigabytes does the average computer require

Depends upon many things....primarily, how you plan to use it and what OS you are running. If you are simply planning to surf the web and do online business, you can get by with as little as 2GB of RAM. This won't provide powerhouse performance, but it will satisfy most OS prerequisites. For mild multitasking or light gaming, 4GB is needed. Remember that 32-bit OS's can only access a little over 3GB of the RAM though. For serious gaming, a 64-bit OS with a minimum of 8GB RAM is needed (if you want to compete). On the other hand, if you are asking how much STORAGE RAM (ie: HDD space) is needed, the newer the OS, the more hard drive space it takes up. Once you have the OS installed, you will need additional hard drive space for swapfiles and working storage for the OS, plus any storage needs you as the user require. Hard drive prices are reasonable these days, and for most recent model PCs (meaning that they have SATA rather than PATA), 1TB would seem to be the smallest drive you should buy, based on bang for the buck. It may be way more than you'll use, but I've found that once you have the space, you will probably find something tro fill it up with. Hope this helps.

HI,
chances are that you simply do not have the resources to run windows 7. These are the basic (recommended minimum), for windows 7

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  • 1 more GB of RAM & 15 GB more HDD space to run 7 in XP Mode.

These are the typical resources that come with your machine.

D510HI

  • Processor Pentium M 1.73 GHz
  • Ram Installed Size 512.0 MB
  • Technology DDR2 SDRAM
  • Hard Drive 40.0 GB

  • OS Provided Microsoft Windows XP Professional
It would probably be advisable to go back to XP
Good luck

Sounds like a kernel panic code. You may be missing a piece of the OS code due to a Hard Drive error from a power issue or whatever. You may need to reinstall your OS. Start up from the cd and save all your data you can to a flash drive or external hard drive and then do a clean install.

Ok what you might try is get a new hard drive and install windows on there and see what happens. Also if you are able to before you try a new hard drive you should do a system restore and restore it back to the day that windows was installed.
