Turn up the level if necessary
To test the microphone, click "start" button, then "Control Panel", then "Sounds and Audio Devices". On the popup window that opens, click on the "Voice" tab, then click on the button that says "Test Hardware". After several seconds this will bring up a test program that will show a noise level meter when you're speaking into the microphone. (The default device listed under voice recording should be "Realtek HD Audio Input".)

You can try these steps :
1. Goto Start >> Control Panel >> Sounds >> Recording.
2. Open the 'Microphone Properties' from the list of devices.
3. Change the status of 'Device Usage' to "Use this device (Enable)".
4. Apply settings and close the window.
5. If still the Microphones are not working, try to reinstall the Audio / Sound drivers. Restart your system.
