SOURCE: how do put staples in this stapler?
1. Hold the black handle -- top part -- of the stapler with your right hand thumb and forefinger. 2. Hold the metal casing right beneath the black handle, with your left hand thumb and forefinger. 3. Use your left hand thumb and forefingers and a wedge to separate the top black part and the metal casing beneath it. 4. Bingo!
Note: Switching the two different operations on to the other hand is unlikely to work.

SOURCE: We have a Swingline 690
I had the same problem with my 690. This is what worked for me.. I simply pulled out the staples from the cartridge a little further than the suggested tear-off point, and the machine was able to start working. Hope this helps!
SOURCE: how do I remove a jammed staple?
All you need is to use a thin sharp wire rod to push the damaged/cramped pin out of the hammer. You can achieve this only if you can have such a tool , remove the lid to get access, manually turn aside to relieve the presssure on the damaged pin, remove the cartidge and replace after the pin is removed. You can also slightly tap to get the pin released from the jammed position.
