TV tries to come on 3 times

My TV made a loud pop one day, and now when I try to turn it on, the light comes on (sounds of electricity, or tv firing up in the back), then goes off. It repeats this 3 times, then I must wait about a minute to try again. After 3 to 15 times, it will eventually come on.

Is there a way I can discharge it, so I can take a look? And what can I touch safely without discharging it?

I believe I know the board you are talking about. Does it have a block like thing on it that sounds like electricity is going through when you press the power? Around that block on the board, it looks dark, almost as if it was burnt. And the board itself seems to be warped some, maybe its not though.

The load pop was something blowing in the unit. I would take the tv to a repair center. http://direct.where2getit.com/cwc/apps/w2gi.php?client=rcathomson&template=searchretail_new

I'm hesitant to tell you that anything is safe since there is an issue in the unit. Typically a TV will discharge itself, save for a few item (Tubes, P/S caps, etc) My guess is there is something in the HV section that has gone bad. Once the back of the TV is off it'll be the board on the far left. If something made an audible pop theoretically there should be a visible sign.

42'' lcd turns on no picture/menu

Your tv is being attacked by electrical surges which seem very violent and has already damaged some logic controls. Please invest in a AC filter which will protect your tv from such spikes....... but first you need to get your tv serviced from the electrical damaged it has already suffered.
