the first thing you need to do is go back to useing K1 kerosene, diesel fuel not only burns dirty but also has a tendency to gel up in cold weather which could be makeing it hard for the heater to draw the proper amount of fuel. To reset the pressure you will need a gage, it should run at about 6-7 psi. you can order a pressure gage from mr. heater online, they are by far the cheapest I have found as they are the actual manufacturer or call 1-800-251-0001

SOURCE: air fuel mixture screw adjustment, forced air kerosene heater

Most ready heaters have a fuel pressure setting on the back of the heater near the fan. There should be two small plastic covers, looking directly at the back, the one on the left can be removed and a pressure gauge installed. The one on the right is slotted for adjustment of pressure. I think the correct pressure for that model is 3.0 lbs.

You Must set the pump pressure quickly! If allowed to run with the nose cone a "bright" cherry red the welds will deterioate to the point that the end will separate from the combustion chamber. Individual sheet metal parts of the chamber are not available.

When heater starts up it puffs fumes then lites

Generally, if the heater puffs fumes at start up it is because there is not instantaneous combustion.
What causes this?
  1. Worn nozzle
  2. Incorrect (click for instructions) air pump pressure
  3. Spark plug carboned
  4. fuel filter restricted
  5. Air leak or vac leak between the pump and the nozzle
Generally speaking, if the fuel is being delivered as a FOG not a SPRAY, and the spark is strong and properly oriented there will be immediate combustion at start-up.

170 reddy puffs smokesince we replaced the fan motor has strong smell of fuel....

I did some research on FixYa.com solutions page--

Check these places out, and try the air pressure adjustment--

ReddyHeater - Troubleshooting Torpedo Heaters If you brought the heater to our shop, and gave the abovedescription, the first thing that we would do is check the air pump pressure.

Then, if the pressure is correct (not just close) we would check the photocellfor signs of insect nest or something similar blocking the view of the eye.

You must troubleshoot to find out if the problem is fuel related or electronicsrelated- maybe these tips will help (click for link).http://www.reddyparts.com/HSI_tips.htm

Strong oders when burning

You probably need to adjust the air pressure going to the fuel nozzle. There are 2 ports in the air filter cover on the back of the fan motor. One has a hole in the center and is used to adjust the air pressure. Turn it to the right to increase air pressure; turn it to the left to decrease air pressure. The other is for installing an air pressure guage (0-15 psi) so you can set the pressure. The required pressure should be printed on the label on the heater. [email protected]

HARD START AND BLOWING SMOKE

clean all of your filters and the spark plug and go back to useing K1 kerosene. Diesel fuel has a higher ignition temp. burns dirty and has a tendency to gel.
