Everything works fine with the cover off, but the flame is snuffed out when you put the cover back on.

Straigt up this is not getting the right air to fuel ratio. Check for a filter that is plugged/dirty. Also check where the air intake is in relation to everthing and make sure that none of the parts are bent or distorted in a way that would prevent the air flow from flowing properly.

I have changed the ignitor, the air and fuel

Have you checked the air pressure it should be around 6lbs. to do this is in the back on the filter cover remove plug that is on the left side insert a pressure guage turn on heater and look at guage you can adjust air pressure by turning the slotted screw that is to the right of the guage. If you cant get 6lbs of pressure then check the rotor assy. and check to see if you have any cracks any where on the filter cover.

The heater lights and burns fine then gradually

Hi,
The problem you have is most likely the pump pressure. That is the single most important thing that must be right for these heaters to perform correctly. Here is a tip on how to set the pump ressure correctly.
At the bottom of that tip is a link to another on basic trouble shooting on these heaters.

Will one of the newer sensors work in place of my 1457 sensor?

It's possible that one of the newer sensors could work in place of your 1457 sensor, but it depends on the specifications of the newer sensors and the compatibility with your base unit. The I MAX1457 sensor, which is a highly integrated analog-sensor signal processor optimized for piezoresistive sensor calibration and compensation. However, I have no information about its compatibility. If you're looking for a replacement sensor, I suggest contacting the manufacturer of your base unit to inquire about compatible sensors. Alternatively, you can check the user manual of your base unit to see if it lists compatible sensors. Garage door opener sensors are not universal. Safety sensors can only communicate with garage door openers from the same brand.

Question edited for clarity. Question moved from Motorcycles category. Of course not! You will burn out all the electronic components. You can't just double the voltage. Conversely you can't put a 1.5 volt battery in place of a 3 volt one. Get the proper battery. https://www.starrett.com/contact-us# ..
