Palm Pilot m500 (very old model), the on/off button seems to be stuck in the lit up position without the unit being on. I was planning to replace the unit anyway, but it ''died'' before I could get my data out. I am afraid to open it up and tinker with the switch that I will lose the data in the process.
I remember the Palm Pilot days, and the rush to buy them. If you make sure you're grounded (static electricity is deadly to electronics) I don't think there is too much risk in taking the unit apart, assuming you have some screwdriver skills. I have taken them apart without any issue, and iirc, the button wasn't too hard to get to once you get the screws out (four maybe?).
Good luck, and let us know how it goes. I know how frustrating it is to have a great bunch of data in limbo.

The cable with the synch button is for the e2.

Sync the palm with your desktop, after the new battery is in, sync again, it will put it back...

Dhorner64 is incorrect. Your phone is not fried if you are in a restart loop. You need to do a "warm reset" which will not erase data. It is the equivalent of doing a safe boot in Windows. Remove the battery from your 755p, then put it back while holding the up button on the 5-way. Hold the up button as the phone starts. I had to do this frequently, then run the DataViz Tech app, which is available free from DataViz, to fix their prefs file, which was the source of my crashes. The problem was solved by upgrading to Docs2go v11. I was reluctant to pay to upgrade a crashing app, but the upgrade ended the frequent crashes. I have not had a couple resets since upgrading Docs2go, and no reset loops.

Are you syncing the new device to the same username in Palm Desktop as an older device?
If
you are, this will cause problems on the new device. When you sync the
device, it saves the device settings, 3rd party apps, preferences, etc.
in the backup folder in the username folder on the PC. When
you sync
the new device it copies the contents of the backup folder for the old
device to the new device. This will cause corruption in the settings
for the new device thus causing erratic behavior of the new device.
Looks like you may need to hard reset your device and rename your backup folder
Go to http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=887
and follow the directions to do a hard reset. Next before you hotsync
your data back over you will need to rename your backup folder, to do
that go here;
XP
C:\program files\palm or palm one\[hotsync username]\ and rename your backup
folder to backup.old
Vista
Start-->documents\Palm OS Desktop\[hotsync username]\ and rename your backup
folder to backup.old
Then hotsync to your current hotsync name and all your contacts, calendar,
tasks, and memos will come back over.
Show file extensions for XP or Vista
XP
If you can not view file extensions on your PC I would like you to open a
folder go to Tools-->Folder Options--> View (tab) and under show hidden
files and folders uncheck hide file extensions for known file types.
Vista
Open control Panel go to Folder Options--> View (tab) and under show hidden
files and folders uncheck hide file extensions for known file types.
SOURCE: How to move my calendar from Palm m500 to iPhone?
The best way is to transfer the Calendar and Contacts to Outlook. The iPhone can then be synced with Outlook.
Unfortunately, tasks and memos do not transfer. You will need to find other 3rd party apps that are supported on the iPhone and transfer your data to them.
Two examples are:
1. Evernote - This is good for memo. You can export your memos and then import them into Evernote. unfortunately, when I did this, it was a bit tricky. I even had to write a little PERL script to create the format that it wanted.
2. RemembertheMilk - this is a todo application
