Set-up (Programming) procedure is too much to type in here, and is not practical and it will differ brand-to-brand remote controls. If you wish to get more; check the sites linked here. The site has set-up code list & set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. The site has general set-up codes to check with TVs and other devices are given, in the order of the 'device's brand name list' in alphabetical order. Set-up code list to many brand remote controls also is given. Pull up older posts. Search the sites by type in the brand name to your device in its search box at the top right part of the display window. It will help you to find the document easily.

Programming Notes
• If your device does not respond to the remote after trying all codes listed or your brand is not listed in the code list, use the Auto Code Search method to program your remote.
• Sometimes the first code that "works" with your device may operate only a few functions of your device. There may be another code in the code list that performs more functions. Try other codes from the code list for more functionality.
This is a trial and error procedure; and quiet time consuming. You might have to check different codes said for your device.
Search the site by type in the "brand name" to your device; to which you want set-up codes; in the "Search box at the top right of the display window" to get gathered related posts.

Code for remote

I would GOOGLE the model number of the remote for a list of codes if of course you have not tried that.

Also, some remotes have a search mode where you can in sequence try every code listed.

If its a RCA a universal RCA remote should work with no programming needed.

Want to set up Universal remote broke original remote

Universial Remotes come with an instruction booklet that will detail how to program your new remote with your audio/video devices.

There is a 4-5 digit code for television/dvd/vcrs that you need to input on the remote control via its programming sequence in order to use it with your tv/dvd player.

The programming is usually done by pressing and holding 2 buttons on the remote until you see a flashing light on the remotes LED then by inputting the necessary code.

My Sony remote is RM-YD024 - I am trying to find the code for a Denon DVD player, Norm.

Here are all the codes for your Denon DVD player.

30490, 30634, 31634

Just in case you don't have the manual I also included the steps to input the codes.
Hope this helps

Follow these steps to program the remote control.
NOTE: Even though the FUNCTION buttons are labeled for specific components, they can be programmed to operate any type of equipment that is compatible with this remote control. For example, the BD/DVD function can be programmed to operate a VCR, AV receiver, etc.
  1. Turn on the component to be programmed.
  2. On the remote control, press and hold the INPUT button.
  3. While holding INPUT button, press the FUNCTION button for the desired component.
  4. Release both buttons.
  5. NOTE: The FUNCTION button will blink for approximately 30 seconds or until a code is entered.
  6. Using the number pad, enter the component's manufacturer code.
  7. NOTE: If more than one code number is listed for the manufacturer, enter one code at a time until you find one that works.
  8. Press the ENT button.
  9. NOTE: The FUNCTION will blink twice if the programming is successful, if not, it will blink five times.
  10. Point the remote control at the component.
  11. Press the component POWER button to verify operation.
NOTES:
  • If a new code number is entered, the code number previously entered will be erased.
  • When the batteries are replaced, the programmed codes may be erased. It may be necessary to reprogram the remote after replacing the batteries.
  • Some product functions may not be able to be controlled by the remote control. Use the remote control provided with the component.
  • In some rare cases, you may not be able to operate your non-Sony equipment with the supplied remote control. This is because your equipment may use a code that is not provided with this remote control. In this case, use the remote control that was provided with the equipment or purchase a universal remote control that has a learning function.
  • If programming fails, it may be necessary to reset the remote control. To reset the remote control, remove the batteries and press each button on the remote control twice.

Can I tie specific inputs to buttons on the remote, to save having to cycle through multiple inputs

yup you can, but your remote generally need to be able to do what is called a macro. It can be programmed to do several button presses in sequence for you to setup different arrangements for your AV. What model remote control do you have? I can check it out for you. Make and model is good :)
