Engine misfires when you engage the PTO then after a frew it runs fine
SOURCE: PTO won't engage
If you look where your belt goes around the pulley on your pto, you will see your pto clutch. There are bolts with springs that hold everything together. Try tightening them 1/4 turn and then try it. If it still doesn't work, tighten it another quarter turn. There is a magnet there that might not be contacting properly. I have a 1605 and just had the same problem. You don't want to have to replace it , mine is like $400

check your spacers to be sure you havent locked the clutch assembly directly to the motor shaft
you should be able to turn it fairly free less some clutch drag

Belt may have come off. Check the wire from the clutch and from the switch, you may have had hungry rodents during off season storage.
SOURCE: Hi,
The circuit through the seat switch may be faulty, get some electrical contact cleaning spray (any auto parts place has it) then disconnect the battery, you must ferret out all connectors and connections. Clean each one and use a silicone type lub when reconnecting. Keep in mind there are likely switches under the mower pan mounted to the transaxle and/or frame.

I had a john dear that did this. I had 2 loose wires that ran into my clutch and I eventually had to replace the clutch. You should check the wire to make sure they're connected tightly and If they are then you might want to be looking for a new clutch.
