Sound is distorted and echo's

It's possible that your laptop doesn't have Bluetooth. My HP G50 did not have it. I bought a USB Bluetooth device for about $10 and it works fine.

My guess is a problem with the headphones themselves. Is the jack pushed in all the way. Are they stereo headphones.

It sounds like a memory problem. I would get a free memory diagnostic utility off the internet, load it on a flash drive and see what it tells you. You may even have such a utility pre loaded on the noteobook. Check during startup what functions are avaialble such a "diagnostics" on the bottom of the screen during startup (before Windows loads). If it is still within an exchange period then I would exchange it for another one. I used to sell notebooks and unfortunately Compaq's were the most often DOA and returned notebooks that we sold, even more so then the lowest end eMachines notebooks. If you can get another make and model I would do so now. IMO HP has gone downhill considerably since the notoris HP/Dell/Nvidia fiasco of a few years ago.

try uninstalling sound drivers and reinstalling them (or newer)

I have sometimes hoad this problem when I had the audio mode set incorrectly. The dialogue comes through the center channel and that's where it gets lost. I had to cycle through (I believe) the 3D phonic setting to get it right. Check the fine print in the owner's manual.
