Is your computer a laptop or a desktop? How old is it? Which make/model of computer do you have?

For an older desktop, the microphone input will be on the back of the computer. There are usually three 3.5 mm jacks for audio connections. The pink connector is for the microphone. The black connector is for Line In and the green is line out (speakers). Often they are towards the far side of the motherboard connections from any PS2 (keyboard and mouse) ports. Otherwise, they will line up with one of the card slots.

Newer desktop computers often have additional audio ports for surround sound. However, the pink jack for the microphone is standard. If the computer has front audio ports, you may find that the same color labels the jacks. Otherwise look closely at the icons next to the ports. These will be in addition to the back audio ports.

Laptops can have the audio ports on the front, back or side depending on the model. There will be a small icon with a stand microphone indicated for the microphone port.

If you have one of the newer USB microphones, plug it into an available USB port.

If the computer has no working audio ports, either get a USB microphone or add a sound card.

I hope this helps. If you add a comment with your computer's brand and model number, I'll try to provide the exact audio port details. (There are some computer motherboards that do not have on-board audio and you will need a sound card.)

(on Windows computers, you may have to change the default audio input. Click Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Manage Audio Devices. (for Windows 7) For other versions of Windows, you may find slightly different titles in the Control Panel.)

My laptop is compaq presario

Firstly please check that you have pugged the microphone into the correct (red) socket.
If that is correct the problem is likely to be in the audio settings. You don't specify which operating system you are using. My answer is for Microsoft Windows XP but Vista and Windows7 will be broadly similar.
  1. Click 'start' or go to 'my computer'
  2. click on 'control panel'
  3. click 'sounds and audio devices'
  4. click 'advanced' button in the 'device volume' box. This should open a long window of audio volume controls.
  5. On the tool bar click 'options'
  6. click 'properties'
  7. There is a drop down menu with the label 'Mixer Device' - click the down arrow at the right hand end of this menu. If there is more than one device listed select 'wave device' from the list.
  8. Further down the properties window there are 2 options 'Playback' and 'Recording'. Click on 'Playback'and then look at the list of devices in the box labeled 'show the following volume controls'
  9. Make sure that there is a tick (check-mark) against microphone.
  10. click ok
  11. Now look at the devices listed in the long window of 'volume controls' make sure that there is NOT a tick (check-mark) in the 'mute' box against microphone and that the volume slider is up at or near the top of the scale.
  12. Make sure that the 'mute all' box (far left) is not checked
  13. click on the 'options' tab on the tool bar once more
  14. Click on 'Recording' and repeat steps 9 to 12
Your microphone should now be working but I assume, from your question. that you are trying to use Voice over Internet Protocol / Skype / Messenger or other chat program. If so you will now need to go into the appropriate program and test the audio properties. Exactly how you do this will vary with each different program but most have a fairly simple test wizard. With Skype the easiest way is to select the test call button.

My microphone on Presario F762NR

Using a microphone with computer

To use any microphone with your computer you will need to enable it in control panel. The following instructions are for Windows XP but are broadly similar for Vista and Win7

Click START, CONTROL PANEL, SOUNDS & AUDIO DEVICES

Click VOICE

In Sounds & Audio Devices Properties window locate SOUND PLAYBACK box. Click the VOLUME button. Make sure that there is not a check-mark in the MUTE box against microphone in the list of devices and that the volume slider is at the top of the scale.

Make sure the MUTE ALL box isn't checked before closing the window.

Now click the VOLUME button in the SOUND RECORDING BOX. Here SELECT microphone as an input source for recording (as opposed to un-checking mute in the playback controls).

NOTE if your microphone is not listed in the 2 sets of volume controls click OPTIONS, PROPERTIES on the tool-bar and place a check against microphone in the list entitled 'show the following volume controls' and then click OK.

That should be it.

To adjust audio volume generally.

Under VOLUME tab adjust Device Volume as necessary. Also (under Loudpeaker Settings) click Speaker Volume and adjust slider to suit.

You might put a check mark in the box to show the volume control on the Task Bar so you can go straight to it to make adjustments in the future.
