Tecra A11 can't see all of 3TB drive

Tecra A11 has a Sharkoon QuickPort Combo attached via eSATA containing a new WD 3.0TB drive. Disk management only sees 2047.88 GB (2097024 MB) Partition Style = GUID Partition Table (GPT) as per WD's recommendations. I wish to be able to use it later in a HTPC media server (still to be built) so need a 200GB boot drive & the rest for storage/archive.

Support for Disk Drives Beyond 2.2 TeraBytes (TB) and 4K Advanced Format Sectors

Most legacy systems built before 2011 have a traditional PC BIOS. This type of BIOS uses a Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR Partitions can define a disk drive capacity up to 2.2TB. Windows operating systems that boot from an MBR are therefore limited to 2.2TB per MBR. A 3TB disk drive in a legacy BIOS and Window system will need a DiscWizard device driver to access the full capacity of a 3TB disk drive. Two partitions will be necessary because of the MBR limitation. The device driver mounts the capacity above 2.2TB with another MBR which looks to the system as a second virtual "physical" device.
GUID Partition Tables (GPT) can define drives larger than 2.2TB. You can use GPT today on any Windows 10/ 8.1/8/7 and Vista system as a non-booting data drive. Windows can only boot a GPT partition on a new type of BIOS called UEFI.
UEFI BIOS desktop systems are new since 2011. Windows 10/8/8.1/7 64-bit and Vista 64-bit operating systems support booting from UEFI and GPT without the need of a non-Microsoft device driver. This is the Windows native solution for booting a 3TB drive to a single partition.
Quick facts about Windows and 3TB drives:

  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista support GPT 3TB single partitions
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can only boot GPT on systems with UEFI BIOS
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can mount a GPT non-booting data drive
  • Intel RST device drivers before v10.1 do not support 3TB disk drives
  • Windows systems with Legacy BIOS and MBR boot drives are limited to 2.2TB partitions
  • Windows XP does not support GPT
  • Windows XP sees a 3TB drive as 800GB on boot or data drives
  • DiscWizard software can install a device driver which opens the full capacity of a 3TB. You can use it to create a second partition for the capacity above 2.2TB

SOURCE: Acer 5100 lost dvd/cd drive

Is the DVD drive listed in device manager under CD/DVD drives at all? If so, remove it and reboot. Windows might be able to re-detect and reinstall the drivers for it, but odds are the drive is bad. You can try removing the drive from the computer, and use compressed air to blow out the area where it connects to the laptop. Also check the connection on the DVD drive to make sure there isn't any physical damage, bent pins, etc.

Hope this helps - remember to rate!

SOURCE: trouble adding 2nd hard drive to hp dv9000 laptop

I have a dv9819wm that had the same issue in which I was runningidentical drives in both bays (to avoid any compatibility issues) - 2250Gb Seagate SATA II's. Here's a copy of a post I just placedelsewhere that will help you to resolve your issue PERMANENTLY, read on:

Something that I finally (After months of working on the problem of mysecondary drive not being seen, or worse, being seen for a short periodof time and then *POOF* disappearing from everywhere, BIOS Windows, everything! How FRUSTRATING!!!! And HPtech support sucks!! Sending it into them resolved nothing, they simplysaid it works and returned it to me. I work on computers for a livingand figured they were smoking something, to my dismay, I was right.

I finally found the cause in a whitepaper one day while researchingthis problem. The problem was that the second drive bay cannot utilizea drive running at 3 G/sec., it HAS TO BE clippedto 1.5 G/Sec. You can check with you drive manufacturer or simply lookat the top of the drive for a jumper setting, but you WILL need a smalljumper designed for laptop drives, others will not work safely. Once Iclipped the drive to the slower speed, it has been running like a champever since (at least the last three months or so). THANKS FOR NO HELPHP!!!!!! Why they would design a laptop that could use two drives andthen not give both interfaces the same connection speed is beyond me.

P.S.- The drives don't need to be the same size, but bigger is ALWAYS better in this case.

SOURCE: HP Pavilion dv4-1135ee ,BIG PROBLEM PLZ SOS

the reason why this happen is that by mistake u have damage the MBR of the new partion u have created. the only way to fix the system is to format the entire system (entire harddrive) using DM thats the only way to fix it.

SOURCE: WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

What you are backing up with Ghost is a mirror image of your original hard drive. You may have repartitioned the new drive for 500 gig but you’re restoring your original partition size of 120 with Ghost. That’s why they call it call it “Ghost”, it’s a ghost image of your drive. If you want to use the full capacity of the 500 gig drive you have 2 options:
1) Re-install you operating system software from scratch and install docs, pics, etc..
2) Create a second partition (500 gig minus 120 gig) and assign it a logical drive letter.

Click the Windows "Start" button
Right-button click on "Computer"
Choose "Manage"
Choose "Disk Management"
You'll see a view of all the disk-drives.
Select the new W.D. drive.

I put in cd and it does not recognize it-i have a toshiba tecra 9000-do i have to press a key or something

The autoplay feature on some refurbished (and sometimes new) computers is at best unpredictable.

To find out if your disk is recognized, go to MY computer: It will display the drives and if they contain anything, it will show there. In the event the disk is not Labeled, double click on the CD rom icon, if the contents for the drive come up, your drive is ok, and the disk is too.
If the contents of the disk do not show up, but the drive is displayed, recycle the drive mechanism.
(open/close)
If that still does not do the trick, reboot your computer, and try again.

As a last resort, an external drive via a USB connection will give you the drive contents.

Good luck and don't forget to vote.

Wd and Seagate usb hard drives attached to computer Will not boot when WD usb hd on Seagate makes no difference

Check the drive letter assignment for the disks, and make sure it is not the C: driver.
I am assuming you can boot and then plug the disk, right?
So use the Disk Manager to check the driver letter, and change it if it is conflicting with another disk.

Asus P5KC board has esata but cannot get my WD Mybook recognised. Should the J-Micron eSata controller be in "IDE" mode? Would appreciate guidance. J.O.

If you are connecting the mybook to the esata than the controller should be on esata.

This link is a generic users manual.

But by all accounts after you set it up and press the power button on the back of the MY BOOK you then power up the PC and use the MY BOOK's Disk managment to reformat it to NTFS because by default it is formated FAT32.

Have you tried in Disk Management Right-Clicking on the drive and selecting 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...' ? That is the normal way to change or add a drive letter to any drive, internally or externally attached (other than by network connection)?
