Tomtom Go 710 - help

Hi, and thanks to anyone that can reply, my tomtom has develped a fault since an update from tomtom home - the fault is that every 5min or so it freezes then reboots. I've followed tomtoms advice of backing up and reformatting the drive, then copying the back up to my tomtom but the problem still exists.
This is my question.
Can i unistall tomtom home from my pc, then connect my tomtom and reformat the device/sd card with no back up, then disconnect my tomtom, go to tomtom download tomtom home, then connect my device and install the relevent software to make the device work and then install my purchased map? Then later install voices and poi's ect.
I'm basically asking can i start from scratch with just a tomtom formatted 710 and 2mb sd card and a pc.?
Any help welcome.

The answer is Yes. I would make sure to have a backup on your PC. Uninstall TT home make sure you delet all of it. Reformat your card then install TT home. Connect your tt and let TT home reinstall your navcore. You may need to reconnect your tt a couple of times to get it updated to the newest navcore for your device. I believe it is 7.903. If you want to keep the older navcore just don't load the new one. Then install your maps as you normally would. I have just used this method to get the latest navcore for six 710's.
Hope this answers your question

Hi, I was having trouble too and have found the manual for the 3rd edition online

I'm following these instructions:

Installing TomTom HOME
Install TomTom HOME on your computer in the following way.
  • Connect your computer to the Internet and then connect your TomTom ONE to your computer using the USB cable.
  • A pop-up window appears. Select Run TomTom HOME. Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • If the pop-up window does not appear, browse to the TomTom device on your computer and run the file named Install TomTom HOME.
  • TomTom HOME is also available for download from the TomTom website.
  • For more information visit www.tomtom.com/home
  • Once installed, TomTom HOME will start automatically whenever you connectyour TomTom to your computer.

Formatting a tomtom go 710

Hi, I probably cant answer all of your questions but I might help with some of them. You should be able to access your TomTom 710 without removing TomTom home software from your PC. It should be accesses as a drive through the USB connection in "my computer" on your PC. When a USB device is connected to your PC it appears as an external drive. Therefore you should be able to delete , load onto , or format the TomTom hard drive ( or with some other models the SD card ) as you would a normal drive . ( an example of this is where you might have a camer with SD memory card and relevant manufacturers software on your PC . you might connect your camera to the PC via USB and the camera software on your PC automaticly detects the camera for it to eb accesssed . However , the camera and it's SD card can also be accessed seperatly by going to "MY Compter" and it should also be visible there as an external UDB device / external drive ) . Now .. to another another question . If you do un-install TomTom home , I dont think it will also delete any backup of your TomTom , it will only delete TomTom Home software . ( the word "think" is mentioned because I have never tried this ). Besides that , you can choose in tomtom home , where you want any backups to reside , so you could save backups via TomTom home to a CD for istance. If you did that , then you would have the backup on a CD rather than your harddrive which means you could safely un-install TomTom home knowing that if it also removed any saved backup you would still have the CD with a backup on it. So , to summerise.... If it were me , I would make a backup of the TomTom by simply copying all the files on it by opening the TomTom up as a folder in "MY Computer" , simply drag any files and folders from the TomTom into a folder I have prepaired ( call it for instance "my tomtom backup" ) on my PC . Then I would format the TomTom drive then reinstall the backup and see what happens. If the TomTom still doesnt work properly , I would Format the tomtom again then use TomTom home to obtain all relivant files , then copy only the maps and .MAC files ( these are the authorisation files for the maps ) from my Backup to the TomTom manually ( not from tomtom home ). I would guess that would result in a working TomTom again ... Good luck.

TomTom makes it really easy to update maps for any one of their devices. You can get the latest Tele Atlas maps from TomTom by heading over to their Map Store. Pick your device, pick your map, and download. While they aren't free, they're extremely accurate and affordable

GPS

I found a toll free number for TomTom, called and actually got a real person. My computer recognized the TomTom (TomTom home was version 7. something); my TomTom unit had software that was too old and it did not recognize the TomTom home. Catherine in tech support sent me a download to update the software and it worked. Thanks for getting back to me. I am attaching the link for anyone that needs to update software in their TomTom GO 300:

Tom tom go 710 for auto

STEP 1

Connect your TomTom to your computer via USB and open up your Windows Explorer and go to the drive. (It will be listed as TOMTOM (E) or some other drive letter).

Copy the Yellow Folders one by one to your PC. Ideally, save all the folders under a new folder that you name.

You may find that the folder ttntools and gns may not be copied. This is o.k. if they aren't.

STEP 2

Format your Tomtom via MY Computer.

STEP 3

Copy the Yellow Folders from the backup you made in STEP 1 back to the TomTom.

STEP 4

Open TomTom Home
Click on Upate Now.
Install the latest update onto your TomTom.
Once installed, switch your TomTom off, then disconnect if from the PC.

Thats it. From now on, make a full backup using TomTom Home prior to any updates.

Also note, that copying all the files will take some time.
