After replacing a faulty HHD, I tried reinstalling Windows Vista from the 7 recovery disks HP instructed me to make when I first got my laptop. When I press the power on, I get a prompt that says: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I put in the first disk, dvd drive spools up, and then: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". Tried booting off the other disks in case I mislabeled them when I first burned them, same result. I am able to enter BIOS setup, made sure I was attempting to boot from dvd drive, etc. I have another, similar laptop; an HP dv4-1220us, same OS, tried using disks from that computer, disk 1 booted okay, but then I got a message saying "these disks cannot be used to recover this computer". This computer has only 3 recovery disks (why so few when the other one has 7? - they were bought at the same time btw), and I know they work since I had to do this same HHD replacement procedure on this computer a few months back. Any ideas?
Sounds like you need a windows vista operating system disc. The recovery discs set your system back to factory settings like when you first brought it home from the store. But to me, the system is bloated with all the software and trial junk that you don't need. If you can get your hands on a Vista Operating System Disc, then do a clean install from it. Just make sure your Certificate Of Authentication (COA) sticker is readable so that you can activate the vista once you've got it loaded. If you can't get your hands on a system disc, take it to a computer repair shop, I would think you could find one that will load the operating system for $60 or less.

Try your old HDD in it and see if that works. If it does work then nothing is damaged except your DVD drive/Controller. Try putting the new HDD in another computer, installing windows then putting it back in the HP. If all else fails then flash the bios with an updated image and see if that rectifies the problem.

1. "no bootable device" indicates:
* no bootable diskette in the A: drive (if you have a 3.5" diskette drive)
* no bootable CD in your CD-drive
* hard-drive is either:
** not connected (power and/or data cables) to the motherboard
** unreadable, i.e., it is "dying"
2. If/when it does "start", backup your files, i.e., burn CD/DVD disks, ASAP, and take those disks to another computer, to ensure that you can read them correctly. Then delete your files from the disk-drive.
3. "one month" old implies that it's under warranty.
So, take it back (now that you have removed all "personal" files),
and exercise the warranty. They probably will just replace the disk-drive, and re-install Vista. Of course, they will *NOT* load your personal files from your backup -- you will have to do that.
4. When you get it back, there _should_ be a HP Utility, preloaded on the new disk-drive, that burns a set of "System Recovery" disks, onto 3 to 8 CDs, or onto 2 or 3 DVD disks. RUN THIS UTILITY.

Most of the boot up of problem because of hardware problem, registry missing or crashed, file deleted or changed.
You can boot up your Windows with Tenorshare Data Recovery WinPE.It allows users to burn ISO file to CD/DVD/USB flash drive directly.
Step 1: Download Tenorshare Data Recovery WinPE in any available computer (not from PC that can't boot up). Then launch it.
Step 2: Insert CD/DVD/USB flash drive to the computer, choose ISO image file. Here we take USB flash drive for example. Then burn ISO file into flash drive.
Step 3: Insert the burned flash drive to the unbootable PC. Run computer and press "F2", "F10" or "Delete" to enter BIOS setup.
Step 4: Use the arrow keys to select Boot tab, select Boot Device Priority and press Enter. Please choose 1st Boot Device to USB, and then press F10 to save setting. Now,you can boot up your PC.
If you have a backup for your Windows then perform a system restore to fix it.If not, reinstall it.If you have no backups for all your data, you can use Tenorshare to retrieve data under any boot up problem. You can get it from http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoverywinpe.htm
Here is tutorial to guide you how to do --How to Recover Data from Computer Won't Boot Up?-Windows Data Recovery.
To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or
a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from
it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white
letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the
percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to
completion. Then reboot machine.
If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.
Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents,
music, pictures, videos or programs.
In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when
the options appear.
In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery
console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.
