This is a common complaint and I always mention that the rubric 'universal' is really fraudulent; they are at best 'multi-device' remotes.
In many cases you can download the manuals for a remote from the maker's website to check for your devices before buying.

You should always include any model numbers of gear for which you need assistance but you did not so you can check when you have it.
The closest to a universal remote I have found is several models made by Chunghop, a Chinese firm.
The model I have in use is a model RM-L988 and the guide for it shows numerous Philips DVD and 5 with -Magnavox so you might download their manual to check.
The 'L' designates a 'learning remote' and that also works well once you have done the first one while following the instructions carefully.
