Faint printing can be caused during the transfer phase of printing. There are 4 items to check, Biased transfer roller, this is what transfer the image to the paper. High voltage power supply, if this is not working properly, you can get faint print. The drum, if this is damaged in some way, it can also affect faint printing.
Faint printing can also be involved in the exposure phase of printing. In this phase the items to look at would be the print head, drum and the low voltage power supply.
Faint printing can also be involved in the development phase of printing. The items involved in this phase would be the drum and toner.
Faint printing can also be involved in the charge phase of printing. The items to look at in this phase is the drum, high voltage power supply and the charge roller.
One over looked cause of faint printing is not having the printer plugged directly into the wall outlet. A laser printer uses alot of electricity. It may work fine for a period of time plugged into a power strip, but there is always the chance that it will fail and you will get odd issues with the printer. You definately do not want to plug it into a UPS, for the same reasons as a power strip, but it is more likely to show itself sooner.
The first item that would be the easiest to replace would be the drum, the next would be the toner. The other items would more then likely require a tech to replace.
