It sounds that the LVDS cable; the cable that connects to T'Con board to LCD panel is loosely fitted. Check it first. If it is found OK, the panel itself should be suspected. I have a similar problem with my Canon S3 IS. Dark/black LCD in Shooting mode. However, I can view my existing photos in Display mode. I was about to spend money to get a Panasonic TZ5. Somehow I bumped into a solution post for S2 IS. Here is the link:

With no video and the the colored stripes, it sounds like the LVDS cable needs to be reconnected to the LCD control board or the control board itself is bad. If the unit is only 3-4 months old, it should be covered by warranty

yes,the set has a main video processor board bad.Sharp is well aware of this problem,and with persistence sharp will give in.
