My Digital Handycam bought in 2003 has developed a fault where the sound recording is intermittent. my gut feeling is that it is the head. I have tried cleaning it with a cleaning tape. Any ideas?

What is your signal path? The question you need to answer is, "Where are you losing the audio?" Are you losing it between the tape and the playback head, or are you losing it in the cable, or are you losing it at the TV/Recorder?
Does the camera have an audio out into which you can plug ear buds to test the audio from the camera playback?
There are 2 heads in the recorder. One for reading (playing) and
the other for writing (recording). 1st try cleaning these heads
using a Squab (Q tip) with a alcohol based cleaning solution
(Radio Shack). Always rub the squab on the head in the direction
the tape would follow, not perpendicular.
dirty video head. go to a store and buy a video head cleaner. that should take care of your problem. yes, even if its new the heads can get dirty just from dust or moisture.
Dear elfox33
Your camcorder has dirty/clogged video head problem. Please use Video Head Cleaning Cassette Video-8 type to clean it. Hope problem will be solved.
your heads need to be cleaned with a cleaning minidv tape. about $20 for one of them, otherwise you will need to fork out a bit of cash to get the heads replaced... probably better jut buying a new camera - a hardrive one!
It sounds like there's a problem with the tape loading mechanism. The first thing you should try is seeing if the camcorder will allow you to run a head cleaner through it (probably not the problem, but something everyone should do regularly, but most people don't).
If that's not the issue, then it's probably something that you can't fix yourself. You should have information in the box that tells you where to send it to for repair.
Good Luck.
