In my case, since the brush wasn't turning, it wouldn't turn on. Cleaned the brush and it turned right back on.
Before replacing the motor, check the switch itself,, it could be bad or shorting ,, also,, if it seems intermittent it could simply be the motor brushes are worn, both of those are much cheaper than the motor, as with many fixes, sometimes its cheaper to replace the whole thing that repair it,, especially with vacuums
