On the laptop there should be function keys that control the display. Look at those and see if it is F4 or F5 and then use the FN key to change the display mode.

Without remote is not possible. Any way try press and hold the power bottom on the projector About 4 seconds while projector is in standby mode . Not sure it will work but you can make a try. DLP projectors use a light tunnel called an engine. The bulb sends light through this part and the image is gathered from that process. Light engines wear out from heat. I am not able to get any service part info on that machine. You need to contact NEC or replace it.

Try cleaning the filters, there is one on the front and one on the side. When dust builds up on these it can restrict the cooling of the projector
