There should be a small ratchet lever to the side of the printer which adjusts how close to the roller the printhead sits. If you adjust this in a notch or two it should move it closer so that it strikes the paper a bit harder. If you move it too far it will smear the top page so try it 1 notch at a time.

If the missing spot is always the same it sounds like a broken pin in the print head. If this is the case you need to replace the print head.

What driver are you using, you should try the IBM Proprinter Driver.Hope this helps.

use the HP laserjet 4 or 4000 print driver. this is the most basic print driver and has played nicely with the older printers

The exposure lamp is dirty and needs to clean on all surfaces. if not fixed then you need to replace the lamp.

You cannot repair this error easily. Most times its the main board that has the problem but its more than likely to be the scanner pcb than the main board. I am actually in the middle of the very same error and have tried the main board and it is the scanner pcb that is causing this particular problem. As you do not state what model you have , I cannot give you a part number.

Check the cyan developer unit and cyan drum.

Unplug the machine. Pull the machine out. Remove all the paper trays. Open all the doors. Remove the Toner. Get a flashlight and look for a small piece of torn paper from a previous jam that was torn when pulled out. Clean the rubber feed rollers with a damp soapy cloth, rinse and leave to dry.
