Cold start runs smooth till it warms up, sounds like the idle control valve or the egr system which are known to produce this behavior.

Easy way to strat is check all your spark plugs.jeeps are also known for the crank positioning sensors going bad.another possibility is the oxygen sensor

  • Anonymous Jan 21, 2011

Wouldn't that set a check engine light if a sensor is bad?

  • Anonymous Jan 21, 2011

my crank sensor and cam sensor went bad at the same time on my 1998 jeep grand cherokee laredo and it did not make a code appear.i ended up putting a new cam sensor crank sensor computer starter and battery and new plugs now it runs like new.i hope this helps

1998 cherokee stall when driving and gets warm ,And wont start till it cools off ?

does your temp gage seem off does it go like up to the h because if it does you could try unpluging your upper coolent sensor because that could cause that because it is telling you computer to run in closed loop when it should be running in open loop

Misses and sputters at certain throttle position

This sounds like the same problem I had with my 87 Jeep 2 door Cherokee Sport.
Thought I had to replace the Fuel pump yet when I went under and pulled it out of the side of the tank I found that one of it's vacuum or return line had fallen/poped off. After I pushed the rubber tube line back on it's metal tube and pushed and remounted the pump back in the tank. Started up and it never ran better at any speed. Yea!!!!!

1993 jeep wrangler runs good till it gets to about 190 degrees. Then it spits and sputters and misses like crazy until temperature gets to 220 degrees. Tail pipe glows red hot. What is going on?

I had a similar issue once. It turned out that the distributor shaft was very slightly bowed. When the engine would warm up the distributor shaft would flex more thus throwing off the timing. I had to replace the distributor.

1995 Jeep grand Cherokee runs smooth in the morning sputters in the afternoon. What could be the cause?

lot of possibilities so we need to know what is missing when the concern is present

I suspect you are losing spark because of the coil

see if you have spark and/or fuel during the concern and get back with me

2003 jeep cherokee laredo still sputters and dies!

It could do that with a bad switch if it was making poor contact before it disconnects, but that really sounds a lot like the fuel pump is going bad...they overheat and start to bind up, then stop...once cooled down they work just fine till it again gets hot enough to do the same thing all over again. I really hate doing this online because in real life, I'd be doing tons of testing instead of making "educated guesses"

1995 Jeep grand cherokee is missing while running. When it is under a heavy load (driving fast) it runs fine. When idleing and slow driving it spits and sputters.

I have the same problem on my 95 grand cherokee laredo. Sometimes it starts out fine and after about 10 miles it starts spitting and sputtering. Then after a while it seems to clean out and run fine again for a little while. Then other times it starts out spitting and sputtering at the begining. I changed the fuel filter and that was not it. It is a 4.0L 6cyc. Any Ideas?

Thanks,
